Okay so I know this isn't exactly sports related (I will be wearing a marlins cap though) but I am going for sushi with the little lady tonight. Never ate it before. I'm a red meat and potatoes kind of guy so this is a little weird for me. Any advice as to what to get?

Am I gonna be hungry half an hour after eating? The portions look so small!

I tend to the tuna and eel. If you want and play it safe stick to a veggie type of sushi. Yes the green wasabi is that fvckin hot too.

peteep you shouldn't be hungry afterwards, sushi and rice is rather filling. I would suggest Tunu (Maguro), it should have a nice pink color. Salmon is good also, but it has a slightly bitter taste. I would stay away from eel and octopus.

You will probably also want to get some rolls. Spicy Tuna Rolls are my favorite, california rolls are probably the most popular.

Ive tried a lot of kinds, really you just have to look at the menu and the descriptions and the pictures and pick out the things you like

but as its said already, play it safe you cant go wrong with california rolls.

I've had raw octopus before! And I agree the eel is usually very good

If all else fails just get tottaly wrecked off saki and toss the little lady the keys and tell her what a babe she is for driving your drunk ass home. ah, romance

Peteep,

Try FRESH WATER EEL (nigiri), try a Shrimp Tempura Roll, Soft Shell Crab roll, maybe a spicy tuna cut roll. The first three are cooked, and will get you sort of used to the flavor, PLUS the missus will love em too The spicy tuna roll is raw, but not a very fishy taste and a popular roll. Stay away from Octopus, squid, and mackeral, as they are a no-no for first timers. Enjoy!

Very good advice as these are almost exactly my favorites also. When my daughter told me to try Fresh Water EEL, I thought She was sick but it has always been my favorite ! Try and enjoy !

Thanks for all the help. You guys are so cultured :)

Tuna and Salmon doesn't sound scary. The eel makes me quiver a bit but "when in Rome...."

i was suprised thte first time i tried it. get the vegie one, that is good, also, some of the ones with cream cheese are great. i am not a big seafood lover, but some of the sushi is good.

if you are in vegas, try sushi king, they have bbq chicken sushi, good shit!

Big,

I eat sushi about once a week and have introduced numerous friends to it. Start off with an order of squid salad along with a bowl of miso. Safe bets are salmon, tuna ( but not toro unless you feel like paying about $12.50 a piece for it ), eel, red snapper and shrimp. All of Jake's advice on the rolls is good too. A rainbow roll will also work but ask for the them not to put smelt or mackrel on it as both of those have an extremely strong taste and smell.

As previous posters advised, stay away from octopus. That crap is one of the most overrated food I have ever tasted

The eel is smoked, not raw. And with the sauce the put on it the taste is excellent.

Peteep, try a Cali Roll, Philly Roll, Crunchy Roll(my fav), and Rainbow Roll.

Get some edimami(boiled soybeans) for an appetizer, try the salad with ginger dressing, and maybe some shrimp tempura for snacks.

If you are not up to raw fish, go for the Spider Roll. It is deep fried soft shell crab with rice. Very meat and potatoes and very good.

Drink a couple of Kirin Ichibans and maybe a little warm sake and I believe everything tastes much better! In truth, My favorite dinner out is for rolls and sushi (whether I've had any beer or not.)

I know you are already gone but my advice would have been to go with someone that knows you fairly well and also is very familiar with a sushi bar. The california rolls are a can't miss item. It was several visits to the sushi bars before I ever tried a thing that wasn't cooked. Now I love sashimi and sushi and rolls etc. ONLY ONE THING HAS EVER made me wonder WHY I ate it and it was on a dare (so I should have known) and that was Urchin I think. GOOD GOD. I had already eaten quite a bit and drank quite a bit and man....it wasn't making it down my throat, but I cowboyed up and freaking swallowed...then swallowed again and again and finally it made it's unhappy way to my tummy. Yech. But, I'm sure someone out there will tell me it's their favorite.

Octopus was a bit chewy for me and some things aren't that great in my opinion, but MOST things are great. tulsa
