Tyson quits, hints at retirement

<HR>
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mike Tyson remained on his stool, and stood only to announce he may be done fighting. A far cry from the heavyweight who pounded opponents into submission in his prime, Tyson failed to come out for the seventh round in his scheduled 10- round bout with journeyman Kevin McBride on Saturday night.

"Most likely I'm not going to fight anymore," said a reserved Tyson, who was ahead on two of the three scorecards even after he was penalized two points for a head butt in the sixth round.

"I'm sorry I let everybody down," Tyson continued. "I'm fighting just to pay my bills. I don't have the stomach for this anymore...I don't have the desire for it. I feel bad for the people...I wish they could get their money back."

The capacity MCI Center crowd watched as Tyson, who in his prime was overmatched by few opponents of any size, had trouble getting inside on the much taller McBride.

Tyson (50-6) began to utilize an effective uppercut in round three to make his first significant headway in the fight, but McBride (33-4-1) was connecting on uppercuts too.

The Irishman also landed overhand rights -- but Tyson wasn't letting him get extended and so the punches were less effective.

After being warned for a low blow in the second round, Tyson threw two borderline punches in the fourth, a round he likely won on the scorecards with good body work inside.

And then -- perhaps showing his age -- Tyson began to look tired in the final minute of the fifth round. The former heavyweight champion was punished by a strong right hand, and McBride ended the round by pinning his opponent against the ropes with a flurry.

The fighters then exchanged blows after the bell sounded for the sixth round, and Tyson was deducted two points for a head butt that left McBride with a gash near his left eye.

The antics conjured memories of Tyson's many publicized meltdowns in the ring.

Tyson was then pushed to the ground by McBride near the end of the sixth, and he didn't make it to his feet until after the bell had sounded. Moments later, the fight was stopped.

If it was his last fight, the end was fitting only for the modern Tyson -- the fighter with more bark than bite, the aging bully who claimed he would gut McBride "like a fish."

But it could mark a sad conclusion to one of the most unique careers of any boxer ever.

"I'll find something to do," Tyson said. "Boxing isn't my life."

Before the main event, Laila Ali claimed the first-ever women's WBC title by outclassing Erin Toughill while her father, Muhammad Ali, watched from a ringside seat.

Ali (21-0) pounded Toughill (6-2-1) with a flurry in the decisive third round before referee Joseph Cooper stopped the super middleweight bout just inside the 2:00 mark.

In the night's first undercard bout, Sharmba Mitchell received bad lacerations above and below his left eye following an unintentional knocking of heads with opponent Chris Smith early in the fifth round.

The fight was stopped and Mitchell received a unanimous decision victory to claim the NABA welterweight title. The District of Columbia native won on scorecards that read 48-47, 49-46 and 50-45.

Ringside physician Dr. William Strudwick said he believed the cut below Mitchell's eye, caused by Smith's forehead, may have been deep enough to expose the eye socket, necessitating the stoppage.

Mitchell (56-4) got back on the winning track after losing to Kostya Tszyu by way of TKO in his last fight, on November 11, 2004. He was knocked down four times in that fight.

Smith (19-2-1) has lost two straight bouts
