I'm the baby, My Sister almost is motherly to me (11 years older) I'm close to her, and she is very close to my 3 kids.
My brother and I live 2 miles apart hardly ever speak except at family events. No hard feelings, we are just not alike.
I really, really, hope my kids are close and best friends forever. I try to preach family, but I guess ya never know.

dont feel bad, dont really get along with my folks or my sister that much. not that close. Sister recently has had 2 kids so I am an uncle, I see them about once or twice a month but my sister is always giving me the guilt trips that it is not more.
folks live in thailand, dad works for the UN & work is the only thing he cares about, I talk to them via email about once every 2 months, horrible really.

Identify w/you totaly! Love my bro (younger), but we are not friends. Completely different. He: same wife, same house, same job, etc. Doesn`t chase, drink, etc. Me all of the above (don`t drink anymore). We heve nothing in common except the same mother. I love sports, women, reading, the outdoors, did I mention women, music, needless to say gambling. He, none of the above. I also feel guilty. Seems as the older and more traveled I should be the one to adjust? If I won the lottery he would get the same share as my kids tho. Go figure!

I think it's natural that once everyone reaches adulthood they go their separate ways and any magic that used to be there becomes just a mild curiosity. Some families stay close in adulthood too but I think that's usually more out of guilt and satisfying the others' perceived expectations than out of any deep desire.
I'd work on losing the guilt if I were you.
Can't say I am all that close with my family. Live in same town with one brother and parents but don't see them as much as I should and yes I do feel guilty. I can talk to my mom easily but after awhile with my Dad I start getting that patronizing father/son feeling. I hate it but can't blame him as he is my father after all. With my brother, his wife's best friend I think wants to have my children which of course scared the shit out of me and keeps me away.
