Saw a piece a number of weeks back and honestly my initial reaction was that these parents were NOT doing a good thing but after seeing the story, I really am unsure how I feel about this.....

The parents had a son, don't remember his exact age but somewhere in the 12-14 range. They allow their son and a group of about 8 boys play Texas Hold 'Em at their dining room table, every Friday night or every other Saturday night, whatever it was. The reporter asks why this is ok and the parents say the boys do play for small amounts of money but that, that isn't the point of the game, it's an activity/game the boys can do together. The parents say the boys communicate well during play and genuinley interact with each other and that this is good for them. The parents say they are happy they know what their son is up to etc etc.....I think you see the point.....

What do you think?

i did take my kids to Mohegan Sun once, let them play in their arcade but stayed w/ them the whole time....my boy and i played for about an hour while the girls walked around w/ the kids.....don't think there is anything wrong w/ that, though i wouldn't make it a habit of brining them....

I saw that (on HBO?).I think there is a down side with anything you do in life. But just recentley picking up the game myself I think there is a lot of upside too. I don't think its anyworse than having a kid play basketball everyday thinking he is going to the NBA.At least Poker you have to use whats between your ears.

yeah thats true...it is dangerous but i do see an upside in it....Its kind of like the old pot argument (leads to more dangerous drugs)
But with poker at least you learn the more fucked up you get the more you will lose...I think poker helps with a kids focus, math skills, interpersonal skills, lot of intangbles and problem solving that are positive that you need in the everyday world...plus the waitresses have outstanding legs when you get to be a big boy.

I think in a controlled enviroment it might be OK.

If I had my gambling career to start over I would concientrait on poker and work/learn it until I became a pro. With so many new players it must be like stealing. If I were to let my kids have a game (I have no children) I would make sure they learnt it and read books and became skilled. The only diiference in a degenerate gambler and a pro is the pro wins. This way if your child turned into a heavy gambler he might have the best of it.

I HAVE 2 KIDS.... A GIRL 7 A BOY 5!!! I PLAY AND THEIR MOTHER PLAYS AND WE SOMETIMES HAVE GAMES AT OUR HOUSE, OR AT A FRIENDS HOUSE WHO ALSO HAVE CHILDREN. SO OUR KIDS PLAY TOGETHER WHILE THE GROWN UPS PLAY CARDS!! MY KIDS SEE IT ON TV ASWELL!!! IT MAKES ME LAUGH WHEN IM PLAYIN ON-LINE AND MY SON SEES MY CARDS AND SAYS DADDY U SHOULD FOLD!! U GOT A 3 AND A 10!!!:lolBIG: OR WHEN I GET ANY ACE HE SAYS GO ALL IN!!!THEY TRY TO PLAY THEMSELVES.... OF COURSE THEY CALL THE GAME BURN AND TURN!! AND MY SON WILL SET THE DECK SO HE GETS POCKET ACES!!I HAD NO PROBLEM WITH THIS....UNTILL ONE DAY I WALKED INTO THE KITCHEN.... THERE SAT MY 5 YR OLD SON AND MY 7 YR OLD DAUGHTER PLAYING BURN AND TURN....... BUT MY SON HAD ABOUT $15 IN FRONT OF HIM(THAT HE TOOK FROM HIS PIGGY BANK) AND MY DAUGHTER HAD TAKEN ALL THE $$$ OUT OF HER KITTY PURSE(BOUT $50) !i asked..what the hell are you doing? they replied we were tired of playing with chips and wanted to play A CASH GAME!  SO WHAT COULD I DO? I COULDNT PUNISH THEM FOR SOMETHING THEY SAW THEIR PARENTS DOING A FEW TIMES A WEEK! SO I TRYED TO EXPLAIN THAT PLAYING CARDS FOR MONEY WAS A GROWN UPS ONLY ACTIVITY, LIKE DRINKING BEER, OR WATCHING RATED R MOVIES. THEY PUT THEIR MONEY AWAY AND GOT OUT THE CHIPS! I WAS ALL-TIME DEALER CAUSE JACKIE SAYS SONNY CHEATS! WE HAD A GOOD TIME PLAYING AND AND MY DAUGHTER WON THE TOURNAMENT. OF COURSE SOONY BOY RAN OFF CRYING SAYING THAT WE CHEATED AFTER HIS A J OFF SUIT WAS BEATEN BY JACKIES PAIR OF KINGS!:lolBIG: BUT....AS FOR PARENTS LETTING THIER KIDS PLAY CARDS......THERE ARE ALOTTA WORSE THINGS THEY COULD BE DOING!!! SINCERLY, SHAWN GOTTI:103631605

A "friend" used crudely marked cards against me when I was about 12. It was a cash game ( he was older, I had the lucrative neighborhood paper-route).

My early experiences betting on ping-pong etc didn't turn me into a degenerate gambler, did they ?

I don't see a problem with this as a weekly event. If it were Contract Bridge then I think we would all approve. The only issue with poker is that you have to keep score with money but as long as the stakes are small it's not the worst thing they could be doing.

Teach the kid how to play, and the value of money. They will be fine. Poker players are some of the smartest people in the world. Not to mention some of the best sports bettors in the world!

Some of you dudes need to realize that your son wanting to do the things you do is a blessing. It means he respects you and wants to be like you. If you want him not to it means you consider yourself a loser and in time, he will also consider you a loser and probably much later on himself as well.

For those of you with children, let's not be naive here. Many of you probably don't know the half of what your kids are doing behind the scenes.
