Oregon State Beavers at Tulane Green Wave
Jonah Nickerson vs. Micah Owings

I try and try to find a reason why Oregon State is going to win this game. I can't.

Oregon State had a very easy road to Omaha. They are starting a right-handed sophomore (who has been great this year) with the #1 team in the country in Tulane, 25,000 fans, National TV, and a terrible tradition staring him in the face. It's not a coincidence Oregon State hasn't been to Omaha since 1952. Sorry Cinderella, but this isn't college basketball. This is college baseball where tradition, experience, and favorites reign supreme. Oregon State plays in a 2,000+ stadium, they'll go to Omaha where it's 25,000 plus.

Tulane starts Micah Owings, who is just flat-out a BASEBALL player. This guy lives and breathes for these moments. Half the reason he transferred from GA Tech was because they choke every year. He wants to be in Omaha, and now here he is. He plays the field, he hits, he pitches, he does it all, and he does it all very well. Tulane has the Omaha experience, they had a tougher road to get here, and they have big-game experience on their side.

My Line:

Tulane -200

Current Line:

Tulane -145

If someone put a gun to my head and said before these first round games, pick which game you think will most likely be a blowout, this is the game I pick. This is as close to a lock of the millenium as we will have for this tournament.

My Play:

(10 units) Tulane -145

Oregon State's Road to Omaha

Oregon State's 1st NCAA REGIONAL Appearance since 1986.
Regional at Corvallis (Oregon State)
Game1
Oregon State 4 Ohio State 3
Note: Oregon State hits walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 9th with the score tied 3-3. Trust me when I say the Big 10 is not known for baseball. Ohio State was a 4 seed.

Game2
Oregon State 11 St. John's 1
Note: St. John's is terrible at baseball. Oregon State might have had the easiest draw for a regional.

Game3-Championship
Oregon State 19 St. John's 3
Note: A depleted St. John's pitching staff, who is terrible at baseball even with a full strength pitching staff, is hardly a championship game.

Super Regionals
Oregon State 1st Ever Super Regional Appearance

Oregon State 10 USC 4
Note: Oregon State might have also had the easiest super regional draw. USC only has 1 pitcher, and he pitched this game. USC was not very good this year, they were a 2 seed and defeated a weak 1 seed in Long Beach for the regional title. USC had 8 errors in this baseball game. Tulane should not give 8 errors to Oregon State.

Game2

USC 9 Oregon State 8 (10 innings)
Note: 2 seed USC after handing OSU game 1 with 8 errors, defeats OSU in Corvallis to force a deciding 3rd game.

Game3 - Championship
Oregon State 10 USC 8
Note: Oregon State blew a 4 run lead in this game as they had blown in previous games. Their bullpen struggles to hold leads.

Omaha 1st Omaha Appearance since 1952
Tulane/Oregon State

Hope that's informative.

Another tidbit of information for anyone debating which side to play...

Tulane is 39-3 vs. righties this year.

Jonah Nickerson, sophomore starting pitcher for Oregon State is a righty.

Nickerson is also widely considered Oregon State's #2 starter, with Buck being considered Oregon State's ace.

Final piece of information...

Winds tomorrow should blow out of the S/SE at 10-20 MPH. Looking at the stadium map, this means the wind will blow out to RF line/1st base stands. This plays into Tulane since they have more power. They get a ball up in the wind it could leave the yard in a hurry to right. As mentioned earlier, Oregon State does not have one player on their team with double digit homeruns. Tulane has 4.

Tulane as a team - 82 HRs, 494 RBIs, slugging .510, 531 runs
Ore St as a team - 39 HRs, 389 RBIs, slugging .446, 418 runs

Like it a lot but since I was 0-2 yesterday that may not be very good. Lost 10 units yesterday but today had this as a 10 unit play. This is my favorite play thus far however see another favorite play coming up. Obviously, I love Nebraska over Florida. With the quality and depth of Nebraskas pitching and the lack of depth of Florida. I know we will see the Florida team that has surfaced many, many times this year. We saw glimpses yesterday with several errors. I expect the bats to go pretty quiet too. I say Florida has a 3-4 error game and the bats go quiet scoring 3 runs or less. It's coming, I am telling you and Nebraska has the team to do it.

Owings is my favorite player of the entire tournament. He is a money player that is coming in hot. His last outing he did not allow a runner past 1st base the ENTIRE game. Not to mention he mashes the ball. He is a special player! Oregon State is overmatched here.

Good Luck Box and everyone!

Ore St./Tulane

FWI, Nickerson was the no. 3 starter all through the regular season, despite 9-1 record 2.10 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 103 innings. Dallas Buck their no. 1 threw 117 pitches in the opening win vs USC, then had to come back Monday to throw 11 more in closing out the Trojans in game three. Tulane has the advantage with their no.1 starter.

as we "spoke" last night on IM - Tulane does look like the right side - but as much as this number keeps going UP - at some point in time it is either time to lay off Tulane or even think about OSU here.

Tulane is better than OSU - but how much better?

Personally, I wouldn't play OSU unless they were +250 or more. I really feel that they aren't the right side in this particular game.

In this game, I feel it is decided by 3+. I could see the final being anywhere from 7-4, to 13-4. I feel comfortable if Oregon State jumps out to a early lead in this one, because of what their bullpen has shown in blowing several leads in the super regionals.

Good luck Tulane-backers!

On the surface, I like Tennessee -126. Should you grab it now? Only if you want to. I've got to cap it, I don't have a line set in my mind for that game yet. I'll have a play up later for that game- if I find any value.
