Outside of tye glitter and glitz of the Vegas strip , how good a life is it to live out there, I read where safety is an issue....It seems many down on their luck make Vegas the last stop before they do themselves in...

Do we get a real idea of what Vegas is like from the TV/media, or is the downside of Vegas hidden behind the flashy neon signs and the dreams of a big payday that can change lives forever?

It seems to me, it would be a very difficult place to live year round...for those that do live there, can you tell us the good, bad and ugly of Las vegas Nevada?

Hope we can get some good answers...Kiss, and Fish and many others, Vegas Vic etc...all we ever see on TV is the sensationalism of it...

I know for one, I tried living at a resort town which I loved to visit...we moved their and after a few months I longed for home....its a nice place to visit but....you know the rest.

When was the last time that you were in Vegas?

Times have changed DRASTICALLY in the past decade or so.

Are you going to that Vegas Bash in August? If so you can see for yourself.:103631605

For those that visit LV and those that live there, I would think its an entirely different persoective no? I was asking more about everyday life in Vegas...work, crime, cost of living, lifestyle etc...

Well, having lived basically on the streets of VEGAS for 17 years, have a good prospective.

Traffic-- Terrible with tons of road rage.........drunks, losing gamblers. This 24/7 to boot!

Smog-- Terrible because Vegas is surrounded by mountains and the desert dust only adds to this.

Cost of living-- Good.......comps and cheap eats abound, low property taxes, no state income tax, and low utilitities. Higher Real estate now though.

Crime-- HORRIBLE! Vegas averages one bank robbery per day and I cannot begin to tell you how many police chases I was in the direct line of on a monthly basis. Lots of homocides also.

Overall- Personally not my cup of tea for a place to settle down any longer...........loved it when I moved there and population was a mere 300,000!

Yeah I know what you mean. Living in and visiting Vegas are two entirely different beasts!!!!!!!

I kinda enjoy the two or three day stay. Anything more is overkill in my opinion.

I have been learning how to play No Limit Texas Hold em the past 6 months. Vegas is a really cool place to play and practice your poker skills.

Well I'm going to try and make it that way in August for this get together. Maybe I'll see you across the "felt" :lolBIG:

I play a mean $3-6 game

The only real problem with Vegas is it’s rapid growth and the growing pains of living in any city. When I moved here it was not much more but a large town. A good barometer of Vegas back then could be found in the 11:00 news. It was absolutely boring and most of it’s content was from other news casts in other cities about what happened in their city because nothing was happening here. I went to L.A. and the first 5 or 6 lead stories in theirs dealt with a homicide. I remember thinking who on earth would want to live in a city like this? Well fast forward 15 years, turn on the local newscasts here, and welcome to the jungle.

I believe the problems that face this city are the same in any metropolitan area. Simply too many people in too small of a area. Cost of living skyrocketing, gang violence, crime, road rage, smog, over crowed school system, lack of decent health care, illegal immigration problems, and a population on edge. If you have addiction issues, lack of self control this town is not for you. However if you suffer from these character flaws, what town is?

Don’t get me wrong for all my complaints I’m still living here so that’s the best testament I can give it.

I got to tell you I simply love it and it has nothing to do with the whole gambling aspect. I have lived there for 1.5 years, I am in New York working a contract right now but will return to vegas soon till April 2006. I am staying in Henderson near Green Valley High School and I have everything I need close. Weather is awesome, facilities are great to play ball, tennis, jog ..etc....I love to play ball and they have softball leagues running year round. There are shows everywhere and food specials galore. Streets are inpeccable and clean perfect for rollerblading. I grew up in Canada where I could only do some of this for part of the year so that is a big factor. Sunset Station casino is within walking distance for the rest. Many good shopping spots nearby. Compared to New York, Vegas is a bargain pricewise.

Of course there are bad spots, just have to know where to go or not to go. It is a cut throat city with a high turnover of people. I have met some quality people but there are also many liars, cheaters and scammers that come with the territory. I see Vegas actually being quite a safe city especially in tourist areas. There are many undercover officers all over the place and cameras watching constantly. With all the high profile people there and just the popularity of the city in my mind it has to be one of the most protected cities in the US.

It is nothing like the way tv portrays it. Lived there on 2 different occasions and would never go back. If you have a family with kids avoid it like the plague.Sapping heat (don't buy the b.s that its a dry heat.117 is 117!),Gangs, dirtbags, degenerates, addicts and just truly sad situations all around. Pawn shops litter the street corners. I used to drive past the plasma bank where these sad people were lined up out the door to sell their blood.truly sad and thats just from a humanity point.
From an economic point 10 years ago when i first moved there (before kids) one of their best selling points was the average pay compared to the cost of living. You could make a good living in the service business. It is no different now then any big city.Add the terrible pollution factor in as well. You can't drink the water.I could go on and on.
The lustre is wearing off and coupled with the social problems it is not a wise choice for anyone at this point to move there. If you don't have a family and just want 24 hour action then so be it but i would recommend anyone who is serious about moving spend a month there off the strip in a neighborhood and you will see what i mean. I can't even imagine what it will be like in 10 years. And what happens when the water runs out???:icon_conf

In my 17 years there, I lived close to the strip....as well as in the NE, NW, SE, and SW sections of the city.

Part of the reason up to 3 years ago I had LITERALLY been in 99.8% of the tavarns in the ENTIRE Vegas vallery...........as a patron no less. Not to even mention every casino 10x over.

Name a bar and I would lay 300-1 that I have been there....as a patron!

This includes the bars on D street, H street, and Martin Luther King!

Sounds a lot like Baltimore, a very large metropolitan area crammed into a small area...Maryland is not a large state, I think thats why it has trouble with its budget, particularly education and health care.

Here’s the real difference in perspectives regarding Vegas. Anyone that has just moved here loves it, (like sharky99). Anyone that has lived here longer than a decade, (like Fishhead), knows what this town used be like and misses it.

All in all it still beats L.A. traffic, New York crime, and you don’t have to shovel heat.

If I was looking for a gaming destination to live I would put Biloxi-Gulfport at the top of my list.
