Does anyone have children?

I just read this on CNN and thought that maybe it will help some people out:

The parents of 11-year-old Cub Scout Brennan Hawkins said today their son "continues to amaze us" after surviving four days alone in the Utah wilderness. They said Brennan was taught to stay on the trail if he ever got lost and also not to talk to strangers, so "when an ATV or horse came by [searching for him] he got off the trail ... when they left, he got back on the trail.

that surprises me also.

A reminder to anyone that has children or may have children....you may need to throw in a "CLAUSE" that allows your children to talk to strangers when they are lost in the woods for four days, starving, and dehydrated. Especially when they are yelling your name.

In regards to the line: when an ATV or horse came by [searching for him] he got off the trail ...... I hope that this means that more than one person came around looking for him....because if he cannot tell the difference between an ATV and a horse he is going to have problems later in life.

These are things that you do not think about when you are raising children....but maybe something to think about.

The parents are proud of what they taught him. Sadly, he would not have to hide from strange ATV's and strangers on horses calling his name if he had been taught not to wander off, by yourself, in the woods. Especially when they admitted he had a poor sense of direction. They taught him to stay on the trail, but omitted the turn around and comeback to camp part. He stayed on the trail going the wrong way for 5 miles? It is not very tough to be cynical on this happy ending. This kid could get lost in a 7/11, for weeks, hiding behind the slushee machine when his name was being called. Don't wander off. Teach the basics before advanced trailblazing.

Best Wishes...OF:howdy:

Hopefully his pokeman cards arrived.

Guys you are right on about this. I am going to include an email I just mailed a couple of hours ago regarding this. Ridiculous. tulsa

God knows you can't ever ever ever ever trust any stranger. Yes, every other child on our block has been kidnapped. I'm sure we need to tell children to not even trust police strangers and fireman strangers. STRANGER DANGER. STRANGER DANGER. Why, in our city we have about six children a day kidnapped by strangers.

Here is the interesting point. Over 90% of child abductions occur by family of the children (most of that large percentage is the father) and are not strangers at all. Most child molestations in the nation are by family/those close to the family and not by strangers. I AM BEYOND WORDS sick of the nation of fear we have built where if you don't know someone they must be the physical manifestation of satan or somebody even worse. I'm sick of it. This kid nearly died because of the irresponsible and unrealistic fears that the parents have passed onto the child. Should we be careful of our children? Yes. Should we teach them responsible behavior regarding those they don't know (AND THOSE THEY DO KNOW)? Yes. Should we pass our fears of what may happen to them by bad people onto their young psychs? HELL NO. Teach them responsible behavior. Do not pass your fears on to them. Be afraid and watchful...it's what parents do, but do not pass incoherent or unjustified fear on to your young children. mk

Journeyman, in our city of 23,000 people no child has been kidnapped by a stranger in the last 12 years I've lived here (only two from feuding family). I'm just saying that people's actions and suspicions would indicate that the dangers were as imminent. Sorry for the confusion. tulsa
