Potential trade targets

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some notable players who could be traded away before the July 31 deadline:
Updated June 22, 2005

On the block?
Joe Randa, Reds
The Reds are sinking fast and looking to shake things up and Randa is one of their most valuable trading chips. The veteran is having another solid season with the bat and he doesn't hurt anyone in the field. Most important, he makes just over $2 million, which is affordable to just about everyone.
Potential Suitors: White Sox, Twins, Braves

Barry Zito, A's
Oakland says he's not available, but most people interpret that to mean 'until we get the right price.' The closer things get to the deadline, the higher that price will be for several teams who are anxious to improve their starting rotations.
Potential Suitors: Phillies, Orioles, Rangers, Red Sox

Ted Lilly Blue Jays
At least four teams are apparently very interested in the journeyman southpaw, sending special assistants to their GMs instead of scouts to watch his last start. Word out of Toronto was that Lilly impressed his audience with his mechanics and velocity.
Potential Suitors: Braves, Red Sox, Twins, White Sox

Preston Wilson, Rockies
Wilson may be the best player available right now. He's a multi-talent who is interesting to several teams, especially now that he looks to be fully recovered from his knee surgeries. A sticking point is the $12.5 million left on his deal which means the Rockies might have to eat some salary to make a deal, but not as much as originally expected.
Potential Suitors: Braves, Cubs, Dodgers, Orioles, Nationals, Rangers

Aubrey Huff, Devil Rays
Tampa Bay GM Chuck LaMar has acknowledged that several teams have called about Huff, one of the better young power hitters in the game. Huff is struggling this season and makes nearly $5 million, but that hasn't scared away anybody who wants him.
Potential Suitors: Braves, Cubs, Dodgers, Orioles, Nationals, Rangers, Yankees

Austin Kearns, Reds
The Reds demoted him to the minors recently, but he's a young power hitter who many teams believe is worth taking a chance on. Aside from the potential upside, Kearns makes less than $1 million.
Potential Suitors: Braves, Blue Jays, Cubs, Nationals

Jay Payton, Red Sox
Payton doesn't like being the fourth outfielder in Boston and taking on a role he describes as being an expensive insurance policy. He says he likes Boston, but wants to play on a regular basis and the Red Sox are trying to accomodate his wishes.
Potential Suitors: Braves, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Marlins, Orioles, Nationals

Jose Mesa, Pirates
Mesa doesn't have a no-trade clause, but has always threatened not to report to any team that traded for him. He's changed his mind now as long as certain conditions are met, which means the offers should be rolling in to Pittsburgh for this type-flight closer.
Potential Suitors: D-Backs, Mets, Braves, Marlins, Cubs

Tony Womack, Yankees
Womack describes himself as a second baseman playing the outfield, and he's not thrilled about it. And as of this week, he no longer has any contract protection against a trade so the Yankees could very well move him, with the Padres looking like a good bet because they've lost Mark Loretta to injury.
Potential Suitors: Padres

Joe Kennedy, Rockies
Kennedy started on opening day for Colorado, but things have gone downhill since then for the pitcher who recorded a career-best nine wins last season and posted the lowest ERA for a starter in Rockies history. But he's only 26 and a lefty, which means a lot of teams are willing to gamble that things would be a lot better away from Coors Field.
Potential Suitors: A's, Rangers, Dodgers, San Francisco
