...why is wrigley field the only park where wind is such a factor? i mean, comiskey park is 6 miles south...no one ever talks about the wind at comiskey.

is the north side of chicago windier than the south side? is chicago windy than new york?

i was thinking about this when i was at the game a couple weeks ago. i was thinking that maybe the wind is such a factor because the stands are lower at wrigley and the wind gets onto the field more than in other parks.

i dont know...anybody know?

Wrigley is very close to Lake Michigan - thus the wind.

I agree with BB, it is the architecture

Cominskey / US cellular keeps out more wind
Comiskey%20Park.jpg
versus wrigley field :

Well, we already know Chicago is the windy city (I have only been there once, and it was in fact windy as hell) and then look how low the seating is in some places, it has to be the lowest in all of baseball, so it lets in more wind

that makes sense. but, if you look at the pics you just posted...it seems like when the wind is blowing in, it would go right over the bleachers and pound the hitters so nothing leaves the yard. that is obvious. but, when the wind is blowing out is what i cant fully understand. i mean, are the grandstands any lower at wrigley than comiskey? maybe a little but, it doesnt seem to be as big a difference as it actually may be.

At Wrigley when the wind blows from the Soutwest it comes right off Lake Michigan and blows directly out to center field at Wrilgey Field. There are times when the wind blows strongly from the Northeast (in from centerfield), and it is next to impossible to hit one out at Wrigley.

willy, the lake is east of wrigley. if the wind is coming off the lake towards the park (west and/or southwest direction) it blows in.

but, i know what you mean. that wind from the southwest blows over 15 mph...nothing is leaving the yard.

i think a lot of times people are confused by the wind charts like that because no one can keep straight if sw wind is coming from the southwest or towards the southwest.

all i know is that the lake is east of the park about 1 mile. and if the wind is blowing off the lake, it is blowing in and probably in very hard. seems like the cold days are the days that the wind blows in and the hot days are the days it blows out.

i used to have a buddy that lived on sheffield and grace (a block north of the park). i used to call him in the morning and ask which way the centerfield flag was blowing...then i'd log onto pinnacle. those days are gone.

I stand corected Blue

New york has an average wind speed of 10mph

Chicago has 9mph

I bought into folklore, and small amounts of personal expierence. Pretty unsharp of me. Though 9/10 is about the same

Here is the link, it's at the bottom. I just used an MSN city comparison tool

never been to nyc but i've seen re-runs of "that girl" starring marlo thomas. her hat was always blowing off so, it seemed like a windy place to me. but, that was the late 70s and i was just a kid.

I was thinking of the ALCS last year, when all the trash was flying around Yankee stadium, but then when I go there it's never windy except maybe once.

But everytime I see Chicago and the one time I went it was windy as hell. That was my reasoning.

But I think watching reruns of 'that girl' was a superior capping tool in this case. lol.

Chicago being called the Windy City has nothing at all to with windspeed or the amount of wind.It is not weather related at all.
