3 months salary is generally what people say when it comes to buying a ring. However not from Boston so i don't know anyone....basically i'll get to the point. Good luck, hope it turns out for the best

Thanks guys.

dmmd98 - I heard it was two months salary? I was still wondering if that was pre or post tax and whether it should include bonus as well? Three months is getting heavy! Appreciate the well wishes buddy, thanks!

SS - Thanks for the heads up. I have the cash but was planning on putting it on a Credit Card and then paying it off at the end of the month since it will earn me more than half a round-trip flight through the rewards program. I was considering going to the Diamond district downtown and paying actual cash dollars as I heard they will cut you a big break, but I am nervous about getting taken for a ride. The place I visited on Saturday was a semi-high-end, no negotiating, take it or leave it type place.

I just went through this a few months ago. Its a total pain in the ass. and i knew nothing to start.

My sister insisted I go to Costco. I checked out a few places that i hear on the radio and in the newspaper out here and ended up buying it at Costco.

They buy it in bulk, only one size (you can size it elsewhere), dont mark it up as much as the other places because they make their money on other items besides diamonds. Either you like it or you dont.

It was appraised for 2x more than i paid so i feel like i got a good value. but who knows?

Good luck man.

Tesco - Agree that it is a pain in the ass, man. Sounds like you got a nice deal. Are the Costco diamonds GIA certified and all that? I am having a tough time figuring out how to balance the size vs. quality aspect....and the guy I saw only showed me three or four stones and all I knew to do was sit there and stare at them like....okay....and....
I was expecting him to bust out that little magnifying glass and show me any imperfections or the difference between say a E color and an F color, etc....MAYDAY, MAYDAY

yeah they are certified and all that. check out their website. i actually purchased it online. sales guys annoy me.

its hard to find a balance between higher cut , color and all that crap.
all i know is at the end of the day all everyone asks is about the size.

costco's markup on everything is 7-8% across the board. Friend of mine used to manage a store

If that applies to everything...that must be a fraction of the typical diamond markup....I better check them out...

Good stuff..... thanks! :103631605

Get a Canadian diamond, with the polar bear laser etched on the face and visible under a microscope, and don't support diamonds of conflict.

The amount you pay is a personal decision and the 2/3 months salary BS is part of the industry hype. Also many women have fixed ideas about style, so if you must get the ring before hand make sure you can exchange it.

I have a friend who wants to sell her ring. She has the papers and it cost her husband $7,000 for it. She lives in Rhode Island and probably wouldn't mind meeting you at a jewelry place to have it looked at, if you want.

You guys can discuss the price yourselves - I will hook you up and then run away. I can promise you that its going to come a lot cheaper than any ring you would buy in a store.

the first time I got married I was a stupid fool and i went to tiffanys. second time tiffanys again. this time I used my insurance company's replacement store. state farm sent me to Solomon brothers in atlanta. I could buy ten rings there versus what I spent at tiffanys. call your insurance company like youre going to file a claim & ask them who they use in boston. ytou'll get treated well with no scam risk.

A couple of my friends have used www.diamond.com.

They have been given awards by Forbes and Bizrate. Even if you dont use, they have a great section on diamonds (size, clarity, color, cut, etc).

As i have no experience in this, from what friends and family have told me it is cheaper/better to buy the diamond separately and possibly from another seller and then take it somewhere to have it set. You supposedly will get a better quality diamond and band for the same price as one that is already "put together". I believe my cousin's fiance bought the diamond online and brought it to Tiffany's to have it set.
