I have had a gamecube for a year now and want to try xbox or playstation 2 but I dont want to buy a new one if a newer version will make mine obsolete in a year.

Any word on the newer systems and prices?

Buy an XBoX no question about it. I have both and XBOX is better. However what you gotta do is mod it since an XOBX is basically a computer. Mod the thing so you can play burnt games, DVD without having to buy the 50 dollar remote and if you wanna go all out take out and upgrade the hard drive to an 80-120 gig one so you can either rent a game or get one off a friend and burn the game right on your hard drive and play it from there. 80-120 gigs should roughly hold anywhere from 25-50 games depending on size.

I would still buy it now even with the new line of systems coming out a) Madden, Live etc are still being released in fall 2005 and b) Programmers won't be quick enough to truely take advantage of the new power of the new gen of systems so most of the games won't be much different so I would buy an XBOX now and wait til next year to see how the dust settles with the new systems coming out

Now is the best time to but a PS2 or Xbox. Best prices new or used, and a built in line of great games. I have a PS2 and a Gamecube (Cube pretty much just for Resident evil 4, which rocks).

It's funny, but I think it's still too soon for new systems. I'm not sure that they'll be able to do a great deal more even with more "firepower" in the new toys. This next gen won't be the giant leap up that the PS2 was over the Playstation IMO.

I see what you're saying Omni, some good points, but it's a no-brainer, he needs to wait just a few more months and pay a little bit more for the new system.......

These arguments are exactly why I am debating. Low prices right now and I would have entertainment of new system for at least a year. However, I could wait if I can get a new system for 400 or less and there is significant quality improvements.

I think I am going to get the xbox (I need a new dvd too)

The current one SCnit, or the new one coming out?
Have you done any research of your own?
This really depends on how serious of a gamer you are, or how picky you are......

I think I am going to get the current one...I really want to play some of the new football games now that basketball is over. MLB every night gets old to me so I need to stay busy for another 45 days or so.

I will wait for some deals/promotions at best buy and other stores to make the purchase.

Thanks for all the input!

Think about this, PS2 and XBox will possibly drop in price when the new systems hit the market. I see 99 bucks soon.

Holy, as I mentioned above......

They are "refurbished" , but for a game that's about to be out of date, not a bad deal.....
