Factoid - George "Hooks" Wiltse

George "Hooks" Wiltse

George "Hooks" Wiltse was a Central New York native who played for the 1900 Syracuse Stars and was elected into the Syracuse Hall Of Fame in 1990.

Wiltse had one of the most sensational rookie campaigns in history, winning his first 13 games while going 13-3 in 1904 for the New York Giants. Wiltse went 15-6 in 1905 and 16-11 in 1906. On May 15, 1906, he struck out seven consecutive Cincinnati Reds batters in two innings.

Wiltse's most impressive feat would come during his best season in 1908. Wiltse went 23-14, pitched 330 innings, and posted a 2.24 ERA. On July 4, Wiltse pitched a 10-inning, 1-0 no-hitter against Philadelpia. He almost had a 30-out perfect game but with two outs in the ninth, umpire Cy Rigler failed to give Wiltse a third strike, which Rigler later admitted should have been called. The next pitch hit the batter. Wiltse got the next man and was perfect in the tenth after the Giants had scored a run.

Wiltse followed up his 1908 campaign with a 20-11, 200 ERA season. In 12 seasons, Wiltse won more than 10 games eight times.
