I would say 4 the last 20 years the music has been horrible. There might be a few good bands or singers but the sixties and the seventies it was just the best

rap: jay-z, rza (of wu-tang), de la soul, obie trice
adult contemp: fiona apple, roni gellert, theresa sokyrka, aimee mann, ray lamontagne, bright eyes, ben folds
metal: trivium, darkest hour, as i lay dying, buried inside, unearth
indie: cursive, and you will know us by the trail of dead, dredg, xiu xiu

The music has fallen off in the last 10 years in particular. Early 90's was fine, since then has been a drag, unless you are a hip hop fan I guess.

oh, i'm certainly one of the younger members here (19), but i still listen to zepplin, floyd, etc...
modern day version of floyd: sigur ros is the best i can come up with
modern day version of the doors: the tea party

there's still a lot of good music out there, but i'll admit that with the advent of mp3s/internet, there's a glut of horrible bands because music's so accesible where it wasn't before.

and tesco, what'd you think of the new dredg album? i thought the demos that were released earlier ('the coquette demos') were much better.

I agree with the first part, they are few songs that make me take notice anymore and few bands that seem to wanna shake things up. The biggest band right now is U2 still for crying out loud. Every new band that is coming out seems to be a cookie cutter of another band or artist.

The second part about 60's and 70's music. That is just a matter of taste I would venture that you grew up in that time frame hence you hold the music from that time frame close to you (if I am wrong hell that blows my point to bits) I love 80's music im a retro freak (no i don't have a flock of seagulls haircut however I do think space age love song is a good song) mostly because I grew up in that time frame so it brings me back to a carefree almost innocent time in my life.

Penelope is one of my favourite songs (off Blue Screen Life), they're a great band
Sigur Ros is touring here in September, from the bootlegs I've checked out they're flawless live. you should check out the one AM radio (on level-plane records) if you get a shot

and as for the topic, maybe there's nothing as good as 'hotel california' coming out, but i definitely think music is still kickin'. of course, in 20-30 years, when everything i listen to now is on classic radio, i may be saying the same thing you are.

tesco-for sure, grab my email from a mod

g man-well, nothing new will compare to the 'original', so no, there's nothing like the who, etc...i wish there were more artists like tom waits and leonard cohen, but there's not, so i'm not going to complain about it. there's just so many other genres and bands available to listen to, why get stuck on a couple bands? there are MANY great songwriters out there right now (tim kasher, conor oberst, john k. samson, ben folds, etc...), you just have to find them and give them a shot.

Music took two big hits recently.

First, how you looked became a factor with MTV. This especially hurt the female artist pool IMO. As we know, many good artists are often hurtin in the looks department.

Then came Napster which combined with the music video to really hurt the industry. I am not referring to the financial aspect but how it affected what became mainstream media.

Everyone with half a brain downloaded all the great stuff. This left more kids to go out and buy the boy brand crap they saw on MTV. The phenomenon misguided the radio and skewed the music charts. The demand changed.

This is actually a good topic for the forum. The music industry parallels the offshore industry in a lot of ways.

Its dropping off because the kids are devoid of talent, they are utterly tone deaf and illiterate. In the old days these wasters would know their place in society, leaving the Arts to competent individuals. Look at that bollocks 20 pence or whatever his name is, I watched an interview in disbelief as he talked of his meaningful lyrics and original sound, citing another tosser as his inspiration.

The last 10 years most of all...

I think this is why so many have found country music....then again it could be age for many of us....I still think its more to do with Rock music almost disappearing....perhaps there are just too many alternatives now...country is more like southern rock anyway...Eagles, Lynryd Skynrd, Allman Bros.

Velvet Revolver, Tool, Foo Fighters, & Queens of the Stone Age are all excellent hard rocking bands that I wouldn't consider "metal".

If you're looking for some solid classic hard rock, pick up Robert Plant's new CD "The Mighty Rearranger". It is an awesome CD...and check him out on tour if he comes your way, too, as you will not be disappointed. He puts some new spin on some old Zep and it kicks ass.

Any Pink Floyd fans here? Pink Floyd was before my time, and I'm looking to buy a P F cd. Do they have a greatest hits or what should be my first Pink Floyd cd?

I would have to say, to start with, I would buy:
Wish You Were Here
The Wall
Dark Side of the Moon

They have a greatest hits package called "Echoes", not sure if those are cuts or entire CDs, but listening to the albums straight though is a much better way of listening to Floyd.
