Many years ago. Written in 1948 Orwell simply inverted the last two digits. As time goes by I think he mostly got the year wrong.

For another classic try "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. Written in 1932 and set 600 years in the future that possible society now seems much closer than another 500 years.

I thought the same thing-I think they made a movie out of the book, and (as usual) it absolutely sucked.

Yes, it is a must-read. Orwell predicted a lot of stuff quite accurately.

The most accurate part of that story was how there is always constant "war". The common people are never quite told for certain who the enemy is, only that they are in some far away land, and that they need to be defeated. The people are told that they must make sacrifices to win the "war", and that once the "war" is over, everything will go back to normal. But when one "war" ends, another begins. Sounds pretty familiar...

The people in the novel are also brainwashed to believe that if a person does not "love" Big Brother, then they are an enemy. Eg, disagree with a policy, question a decision, etc. Again, sounds familiar...

1984 might be worth a read in Washington these days.....I guess America was always supposed to hate someone.... Revolutionary War, Native-American War, Spanish-American War, Civil War (each other,) Germans, Italians, Japanese, Russians, Cubans, Koreans, Viet-Nemese(NVA), Grenada, Panama, Nicaragua, Colombia, Iraq-I, Iraq-II, Afghanastan......and waiting in line now are China, a strengthing Iran, and North Korea. LOL at this next statement but if there are other intellegent species in the Univerese ...why the hell would they want to come here. Even when we aren't at war we find a reason to divide ourselves....welcome to Earth dude.

These were never assigned books for me although I did read them while in high school, probably over 45 years ago.

funny thing, some of you think 1984 is today. In the commie era this book was prohibited. Does it mean 1984 is accurate always?Excellent book.

I read it several years ago.

It IS AN ACCURATE account as yesterday I had a man put a rat cage on my head....the cage was full of angry, hungry rats seeking to chew through my cheeks to my tongue. Then I found out they were just nose rats and didn't mess with my cheeks at all.

Fortunately, in the end, I won the battle over myself and I was at peace. I loved wilheim. tulsa

an okay book, not great. I don't think Orwell was trying to make a great prediction of any kind. And it was not like anything that goes on Today.

Animal Farm was better, and an easier read.
