Oddsmakers don`t adjust to Peavy`s illness
Julian Dickinson

The San Diego Padres may be without their best arm for tonight’s game against the Houston Astros.

Jake Peavy is scheduled to start in an intriguing matchup with Houston’s Andy Pettitte, but he could be scratched if he can’t fight off a bug that looks like it may be strep throat.

The Padre’s right-hander has helped his team go 12-4 in his starts this season and the oddsmakers’ prices have followed him on his rise. San Diego is listed as a –115 road favorite tonight, but that could change quickly if their scheduled starter isn’t able to go. More Stories

Peavy woke up yesterday morning with a sore throat and spent only a few minutes at the ballpark before coaches sent him back to the hotel to rest. Peavy’s wife and four-year-old son have been suffering from strep throat, so there is concern that Peavy could have the same illness.

"I feel fine, other than I have a sore throat," he said yesterday. "I`ll go home [to the hotel] and sleep. Hopefully, I feel better tomorrow night."

The Padres manager Bruce Bochy said there is a “99 percent chance” that Peavy will start tonight despite the threat of an illness that could infect other players, but the situation is still up in the air. That causes a bit of problem for oddsmakers trying to get a handle on this game.

“You can’t overreact because if he’s going to pitch, he’ll probably be alright,” says Betcris.com oddsmaker Shane Blanford. “It’s built into the line a little bit, but if there’s any sign of smart money coming in, we’ll adjust pretty quick.”

However, Blanford added that up to this point, the majority of action has been on the San Diego side.

If Peavy isn’t able to pitch tonight, the Padres will likely promote Justin Germano from Triple-A Portland. He is 5-6 with a 4.20 ERA in 16 starts with Portland this year.

Pettitte hasn’t had the All-Star season Peavy has, but he’s managed to put together a three-game winning streak, during which he’s given up just two earned runs over 22 innings.

Shit, I was gonna take the Astros and Pettitte even if Peavy was pitching, this just makes Houston look even better.

But you can bet action and not listed pitcher on this game and get better odds if there is a piching change.
Opening line is -1.14 for SD but could swing the other way before game time....you can get +$$ if he is yanked from the game or plays w/ an injury...JMO

Why did Astros pull Petitte after only 5 innings and 59 pitches and 1 run? Is he hurt?

He left his start after five innings with tightness in his left elbow, and is listed as day-to-day. The news was announced in the middle of the Astros' 5-4 win over the San Diego Padres.
Earlier this season, Pettitte skipped a start because of tightness in his forearm that was unrelated to his past elbow issues. Since then, Pettitte has allowed just 11 earned runs over 48 2/3 innings for a 2.03 ERA.
Pettitte sounded confident he would make his next start, mainly because he has extra time to recover from this one. Pettitte is slated to open the second half of the season, which starts in St. Louis on July 15. That means the left-hander will have eight days of rest before he takes the mound again.
