Oddsmakers don`t adjust to Peavy`s illness
Julian Dickinson
The San Diego Padres may be without their best arm for tonight’s game against the Houston Astros.
Jake Peavy is scheduled to start in an intriguing matchup with Houston’s Andy Pettitte, but he could be scratched if he can’t fight off a bug that looks like it may be strep throat.
The Padre’s right-hander has helped his team go 12-4 in his starts this season and the oddsmakers’ prices have followed him on his rise. San Diego is listed as a –115 road favorite tonight, but that could change quickly if their scheduled starter isn’t able to go. More Stories
Peavy woke up yesterday morning with a sore throat and spent only a few minutes at the ballpark before coaches sent him back to the hotel to rest. Peavy’s wife and four-year-old son have been suffering from strep throat, so there is concern that Peavy could have the same illness.
"I feel fine, other than I have a sore throat," he said yesterday. "I`ll go home [to the hotel] and sleep. Hopefully, I feel better tomorrow night."
The Padres manager Bruce Bochy said there is a “99 percent chance” that Peavy will start tonight despite the threat of an illness that could infect other players, but the situation is still up in the air. That causes a bit of problem for oddsmakers trying to get a handle on this game.
“You can’t overreact because if he’s going to pitch, he’ll probably be alright,” says Betcris.com oddsmaker Shane Blanford. “It’s built into the line a little bit, but if there’s any sign of smart money coming in, we’ll adjust pretty quick.”
However, Blanford added that up to this point, the majority of action has been on the San Diego side.
If Peavy isn’t able to pitch tonight, the Padres will likely promote Justin Germano from Triple-A Portland. He is 5-6 with a 4.20 ERA in 16 starts with Portland this year.
Pettitte hasn’t had the All-Star season Peavy has, but he’s managed to put together a three-game winning streak, during which he’s given up just two earned runs over 22 innings.
