IOWA CITY, IA - The University of Iowa has signed a four-game series with the University of Pittsburgh to play football, athletics directors Bob Bowlsby and Jeffrey Long announced Thursday.
The two teams will meet first Sept. 20, 2008, at Pitt. The second and third games will be in Iowa City, Sept. 2, 2011 and Sept. 19, 2015. The final game will be at Pitt, Sept. 17, 2016.
Pitt holds a 2-1 advantage in the series with Iowa, winning 20-0 in 1931 and 26-14 in 1952, the last time these teams met. Iowa won, 34-17, in 1951.
"I spent a great deal of my early years in Pittsburgh and still have many family members in the area," Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said in a release from the university. "I look forward to playing Pittsburgh and the challenge they'll present."
Iowa's Bowlsby called it a series that "will excite the fans from both schools."
Pitt hired former Chicago Bears/Miami Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt as its head coach in December. The Panthers were 8-4 last year, 4-2 in the Big East, and lost to Utah in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. They have been to a bowl game every year this decade, starting with a loss to Iowa State in the 2000 Insight.com Bowl.
Pitt went 8-5 in 2003, 9-4 in 2002, 7-5 in 2001 and 6-5 in 2000.
The Hawkeyes are coming off their third straight January bowl game, a 30-25 victory over Louisiana State in the Capital One Bowl. Iowa has posted three straight 10-win seasons and is 41-21 this decade, 31-7 the past three seasons.
