from the "how do you handicap" thread

Post capping. Dissecting both winners, and most importantly losers. Grade yourself objectively on each area. Was it a swing game, or a bad beat. Were you dead wrong. Did you get best price, best number, how did line move? Did you adhere to money mangement. .

I'm curious to know what other people do.. I have a bunch of macro's I've written to scrape my betting results of out pinny (my primary book) and I dump them every night into a quick database I threw together..

From there I can see my winning percentages and amounts on sports and types of bet (ML vs RL vs Totals).. I can report on them any which way, right now i keep a high level running total (ROI, etc) as well as a monthly breakdown (by sport and bet type). I recently started looking at days of the week and noticed that I seem to really strong days and just brutal days (monday/tuesday).. i need to look more into this.

I've discovered a few interesting trends which have helped me adjust my unit size based on the type of bet and highlight areas in which to concentrate on to improve my winning pct (baseball totals for one) . As well, looking at my overall BR Graph every day gives me quick indication of how i'm doing.

so what does everyone else use?

Recordkeeping is ESSENTIAL if one is to become profitable over the longterm in this business.

You should know EXACTLY where you stand in your gambling wins and losses.

I have a system that instantly tells me how I stand on a daily, monthly, yearly, and LIFETIME basis.

So many postives in doing this from so many standpoints.

fishhead. is this custom built software or a package you purchased? do you do any analysis on your past bets?

i've actually gone so far looking into using Business Intelligence software to do further analysis on my data. specifically using Cognos products.. (can you tell what industry my day job is in? heh)

Since I have been doing this for years and years, coupled with the fact I am a dunce when it comes to computors, I do everything by hand.

You can do wonders with the WilsonJones Columnar Pads found in any Office Depot or related office type store.

i just use a simple formula and a quick macro to parse together pastes from pinnacles "graded wagers" screen. that lines the data up nicely which i just paste into an access db.. you could also use a quick excel formula to write SQL statements if you want to dump the data that way..

the rest of the work is done via queries. I chose access cuz i needed it done quick and dirty and it's a breeze to report out of. crosstab queries are awesome for this type of data. i can send you the excel sheet if you want..

that being said, wagerstation looks pretty damn cool but i'll probably stick to tweaking my own stuff. heh.

How do you guys correlate and "grade" your data. Say I have 50 bets on various games, do you take detailed notes for each game as you research, and then write down your thoughts etc about the game, so you can match up whether things turned out to be right or wrong?

PS sorry for so many questions, but I am new, obv, and want to learn quickly.

i keep notes beside alot of bets as to how i got to that bet.. did i place that bet cuz of a system.. the pitcher? the weather? hunch? did i follow a capper's picks from here? did i fade a capper on here.. etc.
