Each sport has its own betting rules to cover unusual situations. The origin of most of these rules is lost to posterity. One exception is the rule governing the definition of a starting pitcher.

Newcombe’s performance against the Phils on Sept. 6, 1950 was positively heroic. Starting both games of a doubleheader, he allowed only two runs in 16 innings. The Dodgers won both games.

Both ends of a double header, and today Pedro can't throw an inning in the All Star game between starts.

Go Figure.
