DETROIT -- Alex Rodriguez feels determined to help the Dominican Republic play a key role in baseball's first World Classic, which will take place in March.

That's why the Yankees third baseman has already decided which country he will represent in the most important international event in baseball's history.

"I am going to play for the Dominican Republic, and I am going to make the Dominicans feel proud," Rodriguez said during the All-Star Game.

"I want to say it out loud: I am Dominican," added Rodriguez.

Major League Baseball, the Players Union and the International Baseball Federation have already announced baseball's first World Classic on Monday, with 16 countries slated to participate.

Rodriguez is one of the many baseball players who has dual citizenship and has the choice of representing the country he prefers.

Rodriguez is son of Dominican parents, but was born in New York. Along with other Dominican players born in the U.S., Rodriguez could play for the United States if so chooses.

"I am Dominican, and that's the flag I will represent in the World Classic," said Rodriguez. "We will have a great team, and we will try to win the title so that all the Dominican people will feel proud of their ballplayers and of their own nationality," he said.

The Dominican Republic will share Pool D, which will play the first round in Florida, with Australia, Venezuela and Italy. The two best teams will advance to the quarterfinals.

The Yankees third baseman was one of the five Dominican players to occupy successive places in the batting order for the American League lineup at the All-Star Game. Rodriguez batted second, a place he has been comfortable with during his last two seasons with the Yankees.

David Ortiz, the designated hitter, was the third player in the batting order, leftfielder Manny Ramirez was the cleanup, shortstop and eventual MVP Miguel Tejada was fifth and outfielder Vladimir Guerrero was sixth.

"Our country is a baseball power. With players like Miguel Tejada, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez and others, we are going to keep the Dominican flag at the top," concluded A-Rod.

This irks me. Can't say why, perhaps its the millions and millions of U.S. dollars he making off of Americans who love the game of baseball, or maybe it's because Rodriguez was born in AMERICA, which last time I checked, means he is an AMERICAN, not a DOMINICAN.

Idiot.

He's about as Dominican as I am. If he commited a major crime, he couldn't be deported there. You're not Italian if you were born here, and your parents are from the old country, you're of Italian descent, that's all !

what a jagoff. really. if he was born there, I have no problem with the fact he makes his obscene amount of money here and calls himself Dominican.

As it is, can this idiot sink any lower? you can keep your $25 mill strike out EVERY time the pressure is on loser New York

A-Rod is a dangerous hitter when his team is up or down by 10 runs. When the game is on the line, he rarely comes through.

This is a joke. So many people disrespect people like A-Rod, born in the US but still close to the culture of their parents and that is wrong too. He is American and should be damn proud of that. What the hell has gotten into him for cripes sake??? Not to blow this out of proportion, but maybe he just wants to be on a winner. I would have to say unfortunately the DR looks like a better team than the US, especially if we get the typical American athlete reaction to it with many saying they don't feel like participating.

He speaks fluent Spanish, I have seen him on plenty of Spanish shows before BTW.

Easy choice for Arod, if he makes an error he is booed at Yankee stadium, if he leads DR to a world title he has a lifetime key to the country of DR and treated like a God, I wouldn't pass that up.

does not bother me at all (no one cared when all of the no-name americans played for team greece in the olympics). only thing we miss out on is finding who would have played shortstop on the american team, jeter or arod. imo, arod did this to avoid that issue.

maybe this will make it easier to understand why canada always boos brett hull.

btw, who plays shortstop on team dominican tejada or arod? probably tejada (even though arod plays better defense at short) because arod is already comfortable at third.

With his reasoning and rationale, Africa would field a pretty strong team.
