MURDER VICTIM Carlo Di Matteo gambled his life away while living a high life with a mansion in Woodbridge, fancy cars and a loving family.

Sources say the Chrysler line worker, whose parents came to Canada penniless from Italy more than 40 years ago, was in fact a big-time bookie. He was killed nearly a month ago.

"We all live average blue-collar lives," a staffer at the 24-hour Brampton plant, whose name is being withheld, told the Sun.

"How did he afford the luxurious life he had?" he asked. "Simple, if you are the plant bookie.

"Carlo usually looked like he was mad ... because of all the money people owed him," the plant worker said. "He was murdered the day after the NBA finals, but he had tons of cash to cover himself."

Homicide detectives yesterday would not confirm reports of the investigation focusing on a bookie operation. They also had no comment on the types of questions detectives asked of Di Matteo's co-workers over the past 19 days.

But the force is expected to make an announcement early today about key evidence unearthed in the case.

Di Matteo, 44, was shot June 24 with a large-calibre gun during a home invasion soon after neighbours reported him mowing the lawn outside his sprawling mansion on Cipriano Court.

Kathy, his wife of 17 1/2 years, daughter Stephanie, and sons Michael and Jonathan, weren't at home on the cul-de-sac of monster houses southeast of Rutherford Rd. and Hwy. 27, where professional gardeners tend many of the immaculate lawns.

Di Matteo called 911 and was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital, but died about 90 minutes after telling an operator of his shooting during a "robbery," Det.-Sgt. Bruce West told reporters.

The dying man was found on the second floor of the house.

At the funeral on June 29, Frank Di Matteo told 400 mourners that "Carlo loved life," despite rough times at school in Toronto, after their parents brought his brother here "for a better life."

Before his death, police said Di Matteo was unknown to them.

Anyone with information should call police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7865, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

I have always been surprised that this doesn't happen more often.

It seems like someone lost big and couldn't pay...rather than wait for this guy to send someone after them, they took care of him first.

Another reason why booking yourself is not worth it. You can never really know what closet nutjob is going to blow a gasket & get crazy on you.

The guys will be caught soon, he had video cameras installed at his house and it caught on tape a car pulling up and 3 guys getting out to go in and finish him off.

The guys probably knew he was a book and had a lot of cash in the house.

Seems like if you arent lazy, stupid, or greedy, the bookie business is a good profitable adventure. From what I hear thought theres no such thing as a bookie who doesnt possess at least one of these qualities.

Jman- How long ago did you work at fedex? I read a article a few weeks ago that stated that 1 out of every 5 "non-envelope" packages have something illegal in them and 1 out of 3 when international. I know that things are done, but I wold have never thought at that high of a %. Why does the govt not crack down and make fedex take more precautions?

Video not really clear, just see a black golf and three guys coming out. Should have landscaped better, leaves got in the way. Cops already came by a local bar asking questions. Waste of time, nobody knows anything.

I personally think them man was a rather sucessful bookie. Not to mention that he had a sweet spot. A manufacturing plant was his turf. Well paid middle class workers all gathered together neatly in one spot. I doubt he had much need for a "collection agency" and thats why he was prosperous (they did mention he had fancy cars and a big house right?) I personally think one can be a very succesful bookie if they can find the right type of clients who can afford to play without getting too caught up..(Of course the bookie might have to take the rare step of intervening when its obvious that one of his clients is playing money he cant afford..Some may say its a sign of weakness , but at times,if you are a bookie, it aint worth it taking bets when you know you wont be able to collect. Plus such exclusions would ensure you are around for a very long time and not seen as a "shark" by your clients.
