Yea...it was posted last night. Probably on the 2nd or 3rd page now.

Not sure if this a good trade or not...but I think Colorado is getting a great player in Byrnes.

Wilson hasn't done much and that is scary considering he was playing in the most hitter friendly park.

I agree about Byrnes...he'll be solid in Colorado, and he's already an outstanding defensive player.

As for Wilson, he's been plagued by injuries for the past couple years, but you're right, he should still be producing great #s in Coors. Now he goes to the LEAST hitter-friendly park. But he's still a real talent when healthy, and don't underestimate the fact that he now enters a competitive environment where he will be counted on to produce. He just went from a perennial last place team to one that's competing for a division crown. Players tend to respond in these situations, especially those that have been on losing teams for so long; they'd kill for a chance to win. It's hard to stay motivated when you've already signed a long, lucrative deal with guaranteed money and you're playing for a shitty team that isn't competing for anything.

I think Wilson will flourish in this type of environment. But I guess it remains to be seen. For now, I can hope.

It definitely addresses a need for Washington. Having Guillen and Wilson in the middle of their lineup to go along with that solid pitching is impressive.

I hope you are right and he turns his season around. You made very valid points.

People also forget that the Nats just got Vidro back right before the break, too. That's the equivalent of trading for a big bat right there. He's easily been their best, most consistent performer for the past few years(sad to see him and Vlade split up...killer B's? Try killer V's). He could easily step in and be their best player in the 2nd half now that he's healthy. They were woefully thin at the infield positions, and thus had to make a trade for Spivey earlier. Now with the addition of Vidro, Carroll can move over the SS when Guzman isn't playing. Guzman is KILLING them offensively, and it's only a matter of time before Robinson pulls him outta there completely. Carroll is an underrated utility man who does all the little things both offensively and defensively.

But yeah, getting Wilson and the return of Vidro make their lineup much more potent than it has been all season. Now if only Wilkerson and Castilla could get back on track...

Vidro will be huge...I see he is batting 3rd today. I hope they keep him there rather than wasting him by batting him 2nd again.

I don't know what Oakland was thinking with the trade. Byrnes was pretty good and Kennedy and Witasick are just a hack pitchers at best. Bad move on Oakland's part.

Kennedy has some talent, just hasn't lived up to the hype he had coming in...he might thrive in a pitcher-friendly ballpark, however. Really seems like a great deal for all parties.

I think Colorado got the better end as well...but Kennedy may be worth a shot. He is a big lefty and showed signs last year of being effective.

He was 9-7 in 27 starts with a 3.66 ERA pitching for Colorado. Those are very respectable numbers.

He is getting torched this year...but he is only 26 and could end up being a decent pitcher.

I agree, I like Brynes. I guess they thought Jay Payton was better.

Your right, I think Beane sees something in him. I haven't seen him pitch too often to properly judge.

The question is, does this trade mean Oakland's ready to bow out of playoff contention? Or do they think that this bolsters a staff ready to make a run for the wildcard?
I think it's the latter, but without a consistent offense they really won't be able to hang in the AL West. Texas and Anaheim have too many good hitters...PLUS Oakland was on a roll at the end of the 1st half. why wouldn't you see how the group does the first 2-3 series before making this trade?
Byrnes was HOT in early July, so far is BA has gone up 13 points and has hit in 4 of the 5 games. strike while the iron's hot?

They did get Payton from Boston and I think they feel they improved their team somewhat.

I don't think there is any question they improved themselves...while Byrnes is a nice player, they still pick up Payton to fill his role (although slightly less productive) and they add a left handed starter.

Payton and Byrnes have very similar numbers
(Payton on top/Byrnes on the bottom):

Pretty strong move by Oakland to pick up a starter basically for Bradford when all is said and done.

especially when Bradford might be damaged goods. Plus Beane got cash also from Boston which he loves to do. Reminds me of Moneyball, which is a great read by the way.

I'm fading any team that is playing the Nats, Oakland, or Colorado! These guys are IMPACT players!

haha riiiight...should be a good trade all-around like i said before though. one of the few deals i can recall from recent memory where all parties mutually benefitted. Good for baseball...
