Delete your temp internet files through IE (Tools\internet options\ "delete files" box in the middle of the window.
Delete all temp files....search your entire C drive for *.tmp - Delete all that the search finds
Defragment your hard drive-never hurts every couple weeks.
Always a REAL TIME virus scanner that is updated as often as it allows. A spyware blocker\cleaner like SpySweeper is also pretty much a must have.
Those are the big things that you can do to help keep things running well.

Also, you can run scandisk every couple of months, but unless your machine crashes a lot or "hangs" (where you have to hit the power switch to turn it off), you really shouldn't need to run scandisk-UNLESS your hard drive is tanking...and then you have bigger problems that probably aren't fixable.
