Owens: 'People hated on Jesus' too

While Terrell Owens continues to threaten to stay out of training camp while he and agent Drew Rosenhaus await a new contract from the Philadelphia Eagles, the oft-quoted receiver came up with another comment that could draw criticism.

Owens told the Miami Herald, "At the end of the day, I don't have to worry about what people think of me, whether they hate me or not. People hated on Jesus. They threw stones at him and tried to kill him, so how can I complain or worry about what people think?"

Never one to shy away from controversy, Owens continued, "How can you justify hating me after I worked so hard rehabilitating from a broken leg to get back to the Super Bowl to help our team try to win? Really, you've got to look at who the villain really is in this thing."

Owens seeming to compare himself to Jesus is just the latest in a long line of quotes to get the receiver into hot water.

In April, Owens said, "(I) wasn't the guy who got tired in the Super Bowl," in an obvious reference to quarterback Donovan McNabb, whose late-game management in Super Bowl XXXIX drew criticism.

In an interview with Playboy magazine, Owens took a shot at former teammate Jeff Garcia, saying, "Like my boy tells me: If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat," when asked if he thought that the quarterback was gay.

Later, Owens furiously backed off his "smell like a rat" comment by saying, "I didn't say that he was gay. The conversation and the interview were loose. To my knowledge, I'm not sure if Jeff is gay or not. I've seen him out — he had a girlfriend when we were in San Fran. There's been a recent report that he has a girlfriend now. That was the extent of it. Everybody's going to make a big deal out of it. It wasn't like I came out and said 'Jeff was gay.' People asked me similar questions about Steve Young. Everybody is going to have their rumors."

Owens is Exhibit A in Rosenhaus' contention that players often perform beyond the means of their current salary. While teams can void contracts on a whim, players aren't allowed to re-adjust earnings based on performance.

"What we're saying," Rosenhaus said, "is that same logic that allows a team to cut a player or reduce his salary should apply the other way in this type of situation."

Owens isn't the only player threatening to hold out until his respective team gives into his and Rosenhaus' demands. Packers receiver Javon Walker and defensive tackle Grady Jackson, Panthers linebacker Dan Morgan and Colts running back Edgerrin James are other notable players represented by Rosenhaus who are not satisfied with their current contracts.

The Eagles and Packers have stated that they will not give into the demands of Rosenhaus and the players, and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has the support of Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

"I think it's a mistake if Philadelphia gives in," Blank said in an interview with Sporting News Radio. "I don't know T.O. I know the folks at Philadelphia well. I know Jeff Lurie. I know (Eagles president) Joe Banner."

"In my judgment, if (Owens) had played at that level for two or three years and quietly had gone into management and said, 'Listen, guys, this isn't right. I'm playing at an extraordinary high level. Instead of being the No. 1, No. 2 paid receiver in the league, I'm No. 15 or 18 or 20. Is there something we can do about this?' I don't know what they would have done, but certainly their response may have been different."

Rosenhaus, on the HBO show Real Sports, said that Walker will not report to Packers training camp when veterans are scheduled to report on July 27.

"The news on Javon Walker is that we are, right now, we have already decided he is not going to go to training camp," Rosenhaus said on Real Sports. "We've made the decision that we're not going to report to training camp. And I can't say when we will report, or if, or when, but he will not be at camp."

Walker, who has two years remaining on the five-year deal he signed as a rookie in 2001, is scheduled to make a base salary of $515,000 this season. Last year, the Packers receiver made the Pro Bowl and led the team with 89 receptions for 1,328 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Owens suffered a leg fracture and severe ankle sprain in a Week 15 game against the Cowboys, missed the final two regular season games and two playoff games before returning in time for the Super Bowl. Owens performing heroically in Super Bowl XXXIX, catching nine passes for 122 yards in a 24-21 loss to the Patriots.

Owens is set to receive $12.4 million over the first two years of a seven-year, $49 million deal that Owens signed before last season while working with agent David Joseph. Rosenhaus contends that contract ranks behind the deals of at least nine other NFL receivers.

Jesus can't play football this year.

T.O. can.

Just pay the man!

it'll be worth it.

What he says about who is gay or is not, along with his religious beliefs and commentary, are irrelevant.

It is also irrelevant what he thinks he deserves to be paid...he signed a contract to play for the amount he is due. Just shut up and play.

Teams can cut a player anytime if he does not produce. Contract over done - Non Guaranteed loot. WTF!!! Y can't TO ask for more loot if he exceed expectations for the year. I am not siding with TO, but if he wants more loot it his right to ask for it. It his career and has the right to ask for whatever he wants.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Just like at your job when u want a raise u ask for one. Some people have power and even can demand a raise. He has that power. These owners and teams have been getting over on players for year. I love Drew's Rosenhause Philosophy. If it's ok for a team to ask a player to restructure when he is less valuable then it should be ok for a player to ask a team to restructure when he has a great year.

I hate hold out as much as any other fan. I hate people that whine and make millions. But all I am saying is he has the right to do whatever the fawk he wants with his career. He also has the right to not play and demand more loot.

another idiot.....

Javon Walker will be a no-show at training camp next week unless the Green Bay Packers agree to give the Pro Bowl receiver a big pay raise or trade him, his agent said Wednesday.
"The Packers say they aren't going to change their position, so we are leaning that way. We're hoping for a change of heart or a trade," Drew Rosenhaus told the Associated Press.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson did not immediately return a call to the AP for comment.

Rosenhaus said the Packers have refused to negotiate with him ever since he first approached the team this spring to tear up Walker's current contract, which has two years remaining and calls for him to make $515,000 this season.

"I haven't had very many holdouts in my career, but I've been unable to get the Packers to commit to any discussion of a new deal," Rosenhaus said. "The Packers have refused to negotiate with us. They expect him to play the year out."

"I can't let this player go out on the field and jeopardize his career for that kind of money. I just can't fathom it," he said in an interview with HBO taped last Friday and scheduled to air next week.

Walker hired Rosenhaus earlier this year after a breakout season in which he caught 89 passes for 1,328 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Walker's holdout threat has drawn the ire of quarterback Brett Favre, who also criticized Rosenhaus for his tactics.

Rosenhaus responded by saying Favre should call him to get all the facts.

"I don't think he'll answer my calls," Favre said this week while playing in a charity pro-am at the US Bank Championship golf tournament in Milwaukee. "Set me straight on what? I've played 14 straight years. I have not held out one time. He has nothing to say to me."

Rosenhaus said Wednesday he has plenty to say to the three-time MVP.

"I reached out to Brett. If you take issue with our position, call me," Rosenhaus said. "I'm not allowed to call him. But if he calls me, I'll tell him what our status is. I don't think he knows all the facts. I'd love to fill him in."

Favre said he's earned the right to speak his mind and besides, Walker is under contract, "and to me that means he should be here."

Rosenhaus said he would take Favre's call any time.

How can you call Jevon Walker an idiot? The guy was a pro bowl WR last year and he is making the league min. You only have so long to strike it rich in the NFL, he could get hurt in his first game back and he'll never see the kind of money he should be paid. 600 grand for his talents is grossly underpaid I would hold out too. If you did the same job as someone else and you are either better or at the other persons level and find out that the person was making 4 times more than you are you going to be happy about it? Of course not you are going to want to be paid in line with what you deserve and Jevon Walker deserve a new deal.

Now he comes the point about well he signed a contract which is usually everyone's reply. First off NFL teams have all the say in the rookie contracts its either you sign for around this amount (usually 5-10% more than the guy drafted in your spot last year) or you can hold out and see none of that money because you'll never be drafted that high again. Jevon Walker has made a total of 5 million during his NFL career take away taxes, agent fee he is left with 3 million if lucky. Not exactly in line with what other top WR are getting paid.

Jevon Walker and TO are two totally different things. The only thing in common is the same agent. TO is well paid or atleast not grossly underpaid, Jevon Walker is worth way more than $600 000. A 4th round pick this year will make that much and he won't even play.

T.O signed his contract last year... The eagles got him out of Baltimore and re did his contract last year which they didnt have to do.... Now after a year he says he wants a new contract that is BS.... He thought he could pull the same shit with Mcnabb and the Eagles as he did to Garcia and the Niners.. But he found out Mcnabb is the man and Is a man............ He screwed with the wrong organization.. they made the superbowl without him in the lineup.. and will continue on with or with out him.

If I was Javon Walker, I would not practice or play another down until I got a new deal. One wrong play and he is screwed.

I think it is absurd that they want an all pro WR to make 600k.

If Rosenhaus is such a good agent, he should have negotiated a contract that had escalating salaries for his client, or left things open to renegotiation.

Terrell Owens signed a contract. Terrell Owens still happens to be Terrell Owens, and the Eagles are still the Eagles, I don't understand what has changed.

Guys who don't like non-guarenteed contracts shouldn't sign them.

If you don't like the NFL, go play in Canada or Arena League.

Yes he says stupid things, but he has the right to hold out as much as I disagree with it. No guaranteed contracts in football. Get all you can. The Eagles in turn can simply call his bluff. He isn't a saint, but to me he isn't even close to Barry Bonds in an asshole contest.

Vaulted T,

I feel 100% the same way. I hate holdouts and disagree with them. I think he is makign enough loot and should be concentrating on winning a SB. BUT, I understand it his right to do whatever the hell he wants with his career. If he wants to hold out for more loot than I can't hate on him. Get all the loot u can b4 it 2 late.

Terrell Owens signed a contract.

If I'm not mistaken, Rosenhaus did not draft TO's current contract. He was brought in to clean up the contractual mess TO's former agent made.

In any event, TO is an AH and should STFU about being poor.
