There's a whole bunch of crime/ reality/ drama/ investigative shows that teach people how criminals get caught. Shows like CSI, The investigators, North Mission road, America's most wanted, the takedown, physcic detectives, Cops, and many more.

These shows tell you how the criminals got caught.

I think they give criminals tips on how to avoid capture, as well. Cut that rape victims hands off, and dispose of them, your DNA may be under her fingernails from when she scratched you... grab the tapes from the VCR recording the cameras.... sink that body good.... don't cover your robbery with arson by starting the fire in multiple locations, fires don't start in 3 places at the same time, and on and on.

They give good info on how to avoid being a victim, but at the same time teach criminals how to excell at their craft.

I recently saw one where a clergyman killed his wife. He doped her with sleeping pills and drowned her while unconscious in the bathtub. He got caught by detectives inspecting his hard drive and finding searches about household accidents, sleeping pills ( one in particular that comes in easily seperated capsules). He got the pills prescribed for himself.

If he would have done his internet searches at a far-away library, and bought the pills on the black market, he would have got away with it ! Lesson for the next guy that wants to off his wife !

Why educate the criminals on how to get away with crimes ?

I doubt every case gets investigated to death ! Some Ho or bum gets killed in LV often, just my opinion.

Why would anyone kill another person?

Many reasons ! Self-defense is fine, IMO. Money , not good. Happens daily in USA.

There's no such thing as a "reality" TV show; what you see on TV is nowhere near representative of how real investigations are conducted.

Agree, it presents the limits of investigative efforts, which won't get used often, only when PC, like if if the governor's daughter ( you pick the state) turns up dead, missing, etc.

I still maintain these shows educate criminals.

Doug , I don't mean to dimish your opinion but here is mine

Criminals already know everything that is presented on the shows and MORE

A while ago there was a similar controversy regarding "hacking " books, some said that books that explain the techniques that hackers use to infiltrate networks would get even more people into hacking computers etc

The fact is that those books are read primarily by IT techs that try to learn the techniques that the hackers use.

If hackers wanted to learn to can already do the same by just using IRC chats or underground websites

Pretending that by hiding the knowledge you stop the criminals from using that technique is similar to the concept "security by obscurity" , you don't get security by hiding data, if someone wants bad enough they will find out how one way or the other

I agree with coconut, you end up saying "damn they will get me somehow"

IMHO, a person that is going to commit a violent crime (not a financial etc kind of crime) is crazy at some point and even if they were experts.......when you are killing someone you will most likely be out of your mind and make mistakes

My two cents.. :)

OK, but is the average felon, above or below average in IQ ? CSI brings up points I'd never think of !
