Normally im against trades that involve starting pitchers for starting position players but I think the Padres got ripped off big time with this trade. Whoever said Ponson is any better than a average 4th starter anyway.

I think this greatly improves the chances of Baltimore getting Burnett. This is now a 3 team race in the AL East if you still count the Yanks as a contender.

No one within Baltimore liked Ponson he is a typically case of a guy who needs a fresh start since he is consider a guy who stopped caring after he got his big contract. Nevin is a good bat plus his contract is a couple of years shorter than Ponson. This move for Baltimore is an addition by subtaction. I wouldn't say its a rip off but I wouldn't go planning a parade in Baltimore either.

WTF is San Diego thinking? Have they watched any tape of Ponson whatsoever? He sucks real bad. Throwing batting practice up there. His numbers will improve in that boring ballpark but this is assanine. I hear shit like this and it makes me really wish I had connections to a fast track GM job.

I question wtf is going on. Guy is tabbed to start and yanked hours before post because he is traded? Can you say emergency starter? Extreme poor implementation of the trade. I'll take a wait and see, as he was only part of the problem, and Yanx and BoSox looming. Speaking of looming, was this trade looming? Was it out there, maybe I missed it. Someone help me here, as I have no answer to my question.

Thanks...OF:howdy:

So you are saying an all-bat team sends one of it's few token pitchers to an all-pitching for one of it's few hitters with power(their weak spot)..no wonder they are both going nowhere fast.

Nevin's best work was at CSF, and Ponson is a blowing up so big, that he may sail all the way back to his homeland island on his back when he retires.

Dont know much about ponson but nevin is vastly overrated. if ponson becomes a serviceable 4th starter the deal makes sense.

nevin is a decent hitter but they could probably get comprable production at 1b from mark sweeney. So for them its just a matter of adding a guy with some potential.

I gotta agree here...not a bad trade for San Diego as Ponson is nothing more than a 4th or 5th arm.

Nevin makes $9,250,000 this season while Ponson makes $8,500,000.

Not a big loss for San Diego and a possible 4th starter in return when you pitch in a pitcher's park is not a bad shot worth taking.

Nevin was the highest paid Padre. That is ridiculous. He is hitting .260 with 9 HRs. He's 34 years old and on the decline big time.

Ponson is trash too...but a little cheaper and could easily be a serviceable starter in that ballpark.

posted this in BB forum - will do sohere, too:

Mark this in STONE

THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL PHIL NEVIN WILL EVER AGREE TO BE TRADED TO THE ORIOLES!

he turned down a trade to Cincy a few years ago for Griffey and there is NO WAY he wants to leave the Padres for Baltimore

he will FINALLY get a chance to participate in a playoff game if he stays with SD and he is NOT going to give that up

he doesn't want to uproot his family from SD. his parents live in Placentia - near Cal State Fullerton - and he is from the So Cal area

NO WAY IN HELL HE APPROVES THIS TRADE - NO WAY<!-- / message -->

I don't think he stops in Baltimore...I think they move him on to Florida to replace Lowell.

you are missing the point here

he will never get on a plane to the Orioles or Florida or just about any other place unless they are a DEAD MORTAL LOCK to make the playoffs. he will play tonite for the Padres in their game @ Philly - and he will play for the Padres Sunday and every other game this season

Looks like Baltimore is done trying to obtain Burnett:

The Baltimore Orioles on Saturday have agreed to trade right-handed pitcher Sidney Ponson to San Diego for first baseman Phil Nevin.
Buster Olney reports that Nevin has a limited no-trade clause and he hasn't approved the deal yet. The Orioles are on the list of teams he does not want to be traded to.

With Ponson moving to the Padres, the Orioles deal to acquire Florida Marlins right-hander A.J. Burnett has been shelved.

A three-way deal with the Orioles and Texas Rangers, which would have sent Burnett to Baltimore, was "killed" by the Orioles this weekend, according to a baseball man familiar with the deal, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported. So the Marlins are believed to have broken off talks with Baltimore, at least for now, and are back to focusing on offers by the Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays.

Lowell, who is batting a disappointing .230 with just four homers and 39 RBI, is owed about $21 million through 2007.

Ponson was moved to San Diego once he refused a trade to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for left-handed reliever Trever Miller.

The Padres have a need for a starter with Adam Eaton likely heading to the bullpen. Troubled with elbow pain, Eaton can't throw his curveball, relegating him as a fastball-changeup reliever.

Now the Marlins have to try to find a taker for third baseman Mike Lowell with Burnett, or return to the possibilities with the White Sox and Red Sox.

The White Sox figure to head the list of other deals, with prospect Brandon McCarthy heading the package along with Jose Contreras. The Red Sox offer would center on right-handed pitcher Bronson Arroyo.

looks like the padres just got joe randa to fill the spot left open by nevin. i can only imagine that the pads and nevin discussed this possibilty before announcing this deal. It would be a joke if the pads made this trade without first speaking to nevin.

you mean like when they tried to trade him to the Reds for Griffey - and he blocked it?

Does Nevin have a contractual no trade clause?

Who starts for the O's today?

Yes...but it would be hard to believe this would be getting so much attention if they didn't already speak with Nevin.

I would with the late scratch of Ponson, no rumor previous to trade? I don't know what to think. Wish O's would name a starter, I want a line.

Best Wishes...OF:howdy:

and look at who is starting today for the padres @ 1B today:

http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/gamecenter/preview/MLB_20050723_SD@PHI

if they talked this over with him - and he agreed to it - NO WAY he is in the starting lineup - he is on his way to the Orioles - for if he goes out and gets hurt - trade off

i stand by what i have said all along

Nevin will be a Padre until the end of the Padres' season

Ponson was also schd to start. But they had to scratch him, but Nevin also is scratched, he can't play. But is he scratched? Saw no Don Best other than trade announce. No scratch? Strange.

Best Wishes...OF:howdy:

Ponson likes to hang in Baltimore bars and get drunk, very wekk know in Balto, the guy has no motivation, all you need to do is look at him and you can see he isn't putting in a real effort...he had a half a season where it looked like he was growing up, was traded to SF and layed an egg.

Good riddance you fat whale!
