I really believe if Armstrong came back next year he could win again. I think Armstrong is leaving his sport more on top than any other athlete of all time. The only one I can think of that compares to Armstrong is maybe Barry Sanders.
Can anyone else think of an athlete in any sport who has left his or her sport in better shape?

Just look at some of the players who have disgraced themselves staying too long.

Willie Mays
Pete Rose
Jerry Rice
Kevin Brown

It says something to be able to step away with alot of gas in the tank.

Thats a great one Kermit. Especially in a sport like boxing when people dont know when to quit.

You can add Hollyfield to the list of people who have disgraced themselves by staying too long.

Lets leave the injury factor out of this. Sandy had no choice but to leave.

If Barry Bonds never plays again then he will also be listed as injured.

Many guys retired due to injuries so it still doesn't minimize their last season.

Lance has also said physically and mentally he can't go another year as well.

I can still see Kirk Gibson with his half walk, half run pulling his leg around the bases after jacking off of Mr. Eckersley! I still think it was more amazing when he walked the batter before Gibson! But, I guess you will say Gibson retired soon after due to injuries, still, a great moment for me!:103631605

Lennox Lewis retires!
Champion says "Let the next era begin."

<!-- #BeginDate format:Am1 -->February 6, 2004<!-- #EndDate -->

By Keith Holland

World heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis announced his retirement today at a press conference at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, England. Many expected the announcement as Lewis stood to address the assembled press hordes.

"It's a special day in my life - I'd like to announce that June 21 2003 was my last fight as a professional boxer," Lewis stated. "...I will definitely be the third heavyweight boxer to retire as heavyweight champion. I can promise you that. I am proud of being heavyweight champion. It's not easy being heavyweight champion of the world. It's very hard to achieve. It's even harder to keep, to stay at the top. I am a person who believes if you can't give 110% you shouldn't do it. I've given a 110% in my sport. I respect boxing a great deal. It has done so much for me. One of the reasons I am retiring is that I respect the sport so much. It is time for the younger generation of boxers to make their own route to become heavyweight champion.

THIS is totally on top:

The peerless Denver Broncos quarterback, the architect of a record 47 game-saving drives, told friends he has had enough after 16 seasons of pro football. His announcement could come as early as Monday.

Not even the prospect of a third straight Super Bowl title could entice him to stay.

On a side note clemens allmost left before his best seasons. Who left before he was on top thread.

John Elway was not nearly the QB he was early in his career. Terrell Davis had alot to do with the 2 Super Bowls.

We are talking about the most demanding sport in the world. Try biking for 150 miles uphill in the mountains for 3 weeks. This is unbelievable!!! I dont see any of the answers that would make me change my mind on Armstrong other than maybe Rocky Marciano and Barry Sanders.

JIM BROWN.

Left without injury to work in movies at 29 and only had
8 rushing titles in the 9 years he played including the last one.
