Emanuel Jose Sanchez, a 22-year-old apprentice jockey from Carolina, Puerto Rico, rode Bear on Tour in the fourth race Friday at the track. Later, he went into the shower in the jockeys' room, where he was found lying on the floor, the thoroughbred race track said in a statement.

Sanchez was transported to Bon Secours Community Hospital in Richmond, but his condition deteriorated and he fell into a coma and then died, the track said. It wasn't clear whether he died late Friday or early Saturday.

Stanley K. Bowker, the commission's executive secretary and a Colonial Downs racing steward, said the organization is awaiting a staff report, as well as a report from the Virginia's medical examiner's office.

Concerned stewards met with Sanchez after he was "dizzy and lightheaded" following a June 19 race he won on Mark Me Special, Bowker said. "His explanation was that he was losing weight, but that it wouldn't be a problem anymore," he said.

Bowker said he wasn't aware of Sanchez having any problems before the rider's collapse.

Colonial Downs general manager John Mooney said he learned from jockeys that Sanchez had been in the sauna earlier Friday. But he says it's not unusual for riders to hit the sauna -- not just for weight loss but also for therapeutic purposes.

The Jockeys Guild, which represents riders, has petitioned state racing commissions to raise the jockey's weight scale to a minimum of 53 1/2 kilos (118 pounds) and to prohibit body fat levels of less than 5 percent.

Friday, Sanchez rode at 51 1/2 kilos (114 pounds).

Sanchez had ridden in 14 races since the start of the Colonial meet, winning one and finishing third in another race. He also rode in 10 races at Pimlico earlier this year.
