most locals I have dealt with take bets on how many "times" you want it
that kind of line from the paper makes it real easy
"100 times on Boston" = $500 bet
now when you look at the line it is easy to figure out you are laying $1100 to win $500 (just multiply the # in the paper by the number of times)
easier than quoting "-220" and then doing the math
Likewise,
If using offshore lines of +180 and a player calls and wants to bet $350 on that game, no way your average bookie figures that out without a calculator handy
but using the line above, the player would say "70 times on Tampa" and all the book has to do is simple math (70 X 9 = 630)
2 seconds later he can see it is $350 to win $630
