MLB Hot Lines: Friday`s fab plays
Jon Campbell
Detroit vs. Oakland - Detroit +190
Any time a pitcher has an ERA of 2.50 and is undefeated, you almost have to take him if he’s getting +190 odds. I don’t care if the Tigers’ Shawn Douglass only has five starts this season; he’s 3-0 and has pitched well in every game.
The 26-year-old righty has held his opponents to just one run in four of his five starts and allowed just three earned runs in five innings in his other start. Two of Douglass’ wins have come on the road, which is no surprise when you consider Detroit is a better squad on the road than at home at 26-25 this year.
It’s true the A’s are almost as hot as Jessica Simpson’s new music video with eight wins in their last 10 games, but Douglass doesn’t mind playing quality opponents. He’s held the Twins, White Sox and Yankees each to just one earned run this season.

Cincinnati vs. San Diego - Reds +133
How are the Padres still leading the NL West? They are 1-9 in their last 10 games and they’ve only scored more than three runs in a game once during that span.
They’re so bad, even easy road kill like the Reds can beat them. Cincy is a deplorable 13-33 away from home this season, but the club is coming off a pair of road victories against L.A. in both of which the Reds were underdogs.
Cincy evidently worked on its hitting during the All-Star break because the club has been driving runs across the plate along with over bettors to the window lately. The Reds are hitting .287 over their last 10 games – up from a season average of .254 – and the over is on a 7-3 streak.

New York Mets vs. Houston - under 8 ½
Did you know there are only two stadiums in baseball that see fewer runs per game than Houston’s Minute Maid Park? It’s true. Only San Diego’s Petco Park and Washington’s RFK Stadium see a more desolate parade of runners cross the plate, and it’s not by much.
The Stros and their opponents combine for just 7.9 runs on average in Houston, which may explain their current six-game under streak in which the last four games were played at home. The Mets have a 4-0-1 under streak on the go and five of the seven meetings between these squads have fallen below the number this year.

St. Louis vs. Los Angeles Dodgers - Cards –133
When it comes to Game 1, there isn’t a better bet in baseball than St. Louis. The Cards are 26-7 in the opener of a series, a lesson the Dodgers learned first hand when they fell 4-2 to St. Louis back in May in the first tilt of a four-game set.
St. Louis sends Matt Morris to the mound tonight, one of the top road hurlers in the bigs with a 6-1 away record and a 3.07 ERA. He faces L.A.’s Brad Penny, who has been pitching decently lately, but has seen the Dodgers lose his last three starts.
