Scouting Report

2004 Season

Enough is made of a player's rookie season to suggest how hard playing at the major league level is, so following in the footsteps of an American League MVP certainly doesn't make the task easier. Bobby Crosby, the 2003 Triple-A Pacific Coast League Rookie of the Year, was asked to do just that in taking over the shortstop duties from Miguel Tejada. He responded with a solid season at the plate and a brilliant one in the field. He was the AL Rookie of the Year for 2004, giving him back-to-back awards at two levels.

Hitting

Crosby, a good hitter with very good gap power, led AL rookies in homers. He is streaky and tends to press when he struggles, but experience should help him calm down at the plate. He swung at too many bad pitches as a rookie, but he posted 63 walks and a .395 OBP at Triple-A Sacramento in 2003. So, learning AL pitchers and showing a bit more patience should cut down on the strikeouts and improve his overall production.

Baserunning & Defense

Blessed with good speed, Crosby swiped 24 bases at Sacramento in 2003. Another sign of his decent wheels is his 70 runs scored, despite an anemic on-base percentage in his rookie year. His play sometimes borders on acrobatic with the glove. Crosby has excellent range and a very strong arm. He is capable of making those great plays deep in the hole, complete with the long throw across his body to first.

2005 Outlook

Crosby will get better, but it is worth remembering that he is beginning just his second big league season. It is unreasonable to expect that his propensity for slumps and streaks will come to an end so quickly. On the whole, however, Crosby's rookie season was comparable to that of his illustrious predecessor, Tejada. Be patient and he will get better.

Watched him play for River Cats for a minute. Smooth as silk in field. Nice range and quickness, showboats occasionally but otherwise makes the play. No disgrace at bat .300 is better suited than homers for him. Rookie of the year, part of a real nice infield. Gold glove? Maybe someday. But at $350,000, that is a steal. He will get big numbers next deal.

Crosby big time. Look at the A's record since he came back. His return and Chavez's slump ending are not coincidence.

Besides pitchers, that means, other positions besides pitchers. Want to try again with a non-pitcher? Thanks for contributing Pancho, the effort is there.

he better start making mroe money - for his g/f - and eventaully - wife - is PB Playmate and Fox Sports Babe Lisa Dergan. they "met" when his agent called hers and said he wanted to go out with her. not bad for a babe whose past "guys" have included Sergei Fedorov, Mike Modano and other athletes.

I think it's unfair to include guys who have NO choice in what they earn. Guys like Crosby or Willis who haven't hit arbitration yet, so they are of course making peanuts.

I'd add David Ortiz as a guy earning his money.
