Looking at a couple of 50" plasmas. No LCD, no projection, going with the plasma for sure. Optoma, Vizio and Maxent 50's HDTV ready ballpark for $2500 after rebates. Pioneer and JVC HDTV 50's ballpark for $4500 to $5000. My feeling is there are just not enough HD programs to justify the extra or double price. If the clarity is worth it with HD. Going through Costco so I will not get burned with Gateway fiasco. At least it is returnable at Costco. Bottom line question, is HD really worth the extra money, will it ever become more than a novelty? I can always step up and get another if this is the case. Put this unit on the bedroom wall and upgrade. I just do not see the short term bang for buck to watch a few telecasts in HD. This will be installed and viewable before NFL regular season starts. Might not reply for sometime, but all input appreciated. Again, I am going plasma for sure.

Best Wishes...OF:howdy:

To each his own but for me it wasn't worth the money. I currently have digital cable and it shows about 15 channels in HD (1 year ago it was 3). Lots of programs are in HD but to me it just isn't worth it. I can definitely tell a difference in clarity but it isn't worth the extra 8 bucks a month I pay to get the HD channels. On another note if you have a TIVO (I have DVR through cable company) and like to record your shows, my DVR only records 10 hours of HD channels but 40 hours of regular channels.

Now I don't have plasma but I have 1 Big Screen Sony Tube in the living room and one LCD in my bedroom. So I can't comment on the plasma experience.

If money is no object and you want the best of the best then go with plasma if you want value then go with HD ready.

Personally HD ready would be my choice since i'd wait still another 2-3 years for HDTV to become mainstream

Just an opinion best of luck with whatever you decide.

HD is well worth it, especially for football season, if you have the Sunday ticket. Once you watch it, you will not want to go back. I have become an HD snob. I wouldn't worry about whether your tv is HD ready or HD capable or not b/c you will have to have an HD receiver with either one.

do not get plasma...they burn out...there was a thread about this a few months ago.

HD is worth it for sports, especially for football...most broadcast prime time shows are now in HD and and if you like movies, the HD broadcasts on HBO/Showtime/HDNet are great.

HD is not a fad. It is the future. Go to a good guys or other retailer and you will see the difference...if you are going to spend 5 K on a tv, you can afford the extra $15 a month for HDTV

Unless you're set on getting a 50", also keeping in my mind that money is no object, I'd suggest the 42" LG: http://us.lge.com/Product/proddetail.do?actCategory=tv&archivedYn=&actType=search&categoryId=0000000102&prodId=1000000652&parentId=&parent2levelId=&category_level=2&totalItem=21&currentPage=1&perPage=10
Also the plasma v. LCD debate. There isn't one IMO. LCD's last longer and are less susceptible to image burning. The only reason plasma has been popular is because they could be made bigger up until recently. HD programming is sparse right now however, it will most likely be the standard in the very near future. The HD picture on a good TV is impressive. Anyway, depending on which cable/satellite provider you use you might/might not have to buy an HD tuner
with this TV. Digital Cable=No, Satellite=Yes.

Happy Viewing

I was told about 5 yrs of average to above average use for plasma

I have 65" Mitsubishi HD compatible - paid $2,000 a year ago. directv box was $300 and love it. I have the room, so size didn't matter to me.
HD is here for good - I will never go back

I've heard plasmas have a terrible lifespan as well.
The best TV's out there are the DLP's.
And in my opinion, HD is worth it, the amount of channels will only go up, and I believe there's some law that says within a few years all channels must be at least digital. I think most programming will be HD in a few years myself, at least all primetime shows and sporting events.

HD is absolutely terrific, forget about then way you view TV, the future is here and it's only going to grow.
