MIAMI -- Adding depth to the bullpen is a constant quest for the Marlins.

The club explored several relief options on Sunday and ended up acquiring veteran left-hander Ron Villone from the Mariners for Minor League pitchers Yorman Bazardo and Michael Flannery. Villone is 2-3 with a 2.45 ERA in 52 games, striking out 41 in 40 1/3 innings.

BALTIMORE -- The White Sox made the first official move on the final afternoon prior to the 4 p.m. ET non-waiver trade deadline by acquiring Geoff Blum from San Diego on Sunday. In exchange, the White Sox dealt Minor League pitcher Ryan Meaux, a slight-of-build left-hander, who has been pitching for Double-A Birmingham this season.

Blum, 32, is a switch-hitter sporting a .241 average along with five home runs and 22 RBIs in 78 games for the Padres. But it's the veteran's versatility that attracted the South Siders

They say it's Lawton for Gerut. If so, can't fault the deal at all. Gerut had no future for the Cubs and wasn't of much use this year. Lawton is a clear improvement at the leadoff spot and has a solid OBP with a little pop. Maybe he can provide the type of spark Lofton did in '03. I wonder if this will cause Hairston to sit or Murton/Hollandsworth. Giving Dusty more decisions to make is a scary thing though.

The lineup looks good on paper anyway:
Lawton
Garciaparra
Lee
Ramirez
Burnitz
Barrett
Walker
Murton/Hairston

the question is, who's Kyle Farnsworth going to try and pile drive next?

He sure is - Manny just knocked in the go ahead run in the bottom of the 8th inning with a pinch hit single against the Twins. 4-3 top of the 9th with Curt Schilling coming in.

wil.
