MLB Hot lines: Today`s best bets
Josh Hansen
Today`s MLB schedule is quieter than Sunday`s trade deadline. With only four games on tap for today, and lots of heavy favorites, totals may be the best plays of the day.

Chicago White Sox at Baltimore Orioles – under 9 runs
Everything comes in threes. Just ask Miguel Tejada, Rafael Palmeiro and Javy Lopez. All three are career sub-Mendoza hitters against Chicago’s Mark Buerhle, while Tejeda was the only to record a hit off the White Sox southpaw when the teams met in mid-May.
“He threw a lot of strikes,” Palmeiro said. “I`ve seen him do that before. You`ve got to get him early.``
Good luck. Buerhle’s best stuff comes in the first couple innings while his pitching in day games is nothing to balk at. Chicago’s starter holds a 2.17 ERA when hurling in the afternoon, a few points better than Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera’s mark of 2.49.

Pittsburgh at Atlanta – under 7 ½ runs
You almost have to think Zach Duke belongs on the storied Atlanta Braves pitching rotation. The 22-year-old lefty has taken the league by storm since his first start a month ago against the Milwaukee Brewers. In the 24 innings since, Duke has yet to surrender a run.
Although he’s likely due for a ‘welcome to the big-leagues’ moment, Duke`s shown he’s up to the challenge by shutting down both National League opponents he’s faced- the Philadelphia Phillies and Florida Marlins.
“You have to focus on each pitch, each situation,” Duke said.

Florida at St. Louis – Marlins at +165
Without even looking at the line history for this game, it’s a guarantee the Cardinals have been bet up. But can you really take a team who has just three opening-day starters on the lineup card right now? Sure they are the defending National League champs, but the Cards are playing .500 ball in their last 10 games and are just 7-8 versus NL East division opponents.
If you’re still a little uneasy, rewind to Sunday night’s four-hour marathon in Los Angeles where the Cardinals used six different pitchers in the 12-inning marathon. That doesn’t bold well for tonight’s starter Jason Marquis. St. Louis has dropped seven of Marquis’ last eight starts, including home games against Pittsburgh, Colorado and Milwaukee.
