MLB Hot lines: Today`s best bets
Ryan Stetson
Seattle at Detroit: Detroit (-117)

Reportedly, Jorge Campillo has a heartbeat. That seems to be one of the main reasons why he’s been promoted from Triple-A Tacoma and gets his first big league start today against the Tigers.

The Mariners released veteran Aaron Sele yesterday, so they needed somebody to fill the hole in the rotation. Most expected 19-year-old fireballer Felix Hernandez to be the first farmhand to get the call and it sounds like he’ll be with the big club too, but Campillo fit better into the rotation.

"Campillo fit the slot for Tuesday, which is what we needed right now," GM Bill Bavasi said. "We needed to take care with the amount of work we`re giving [Gil] Meche and [Jamie] Moyer."

Campillo caught Seattle’s eye when he took the Mexican winter league by storm this past offseason. The 26-year-old went 10-1 with a league-best 2.05 ERA in winter ball and did make one relief appearance for the Mariners earlier this year.

Apparently, he’s fit to go after a right elbow strain kept him on the shelf from June 14-July 26. He threw six shutout innings, yielding just two hits to the Iowa Cubs last week in his first start since coming off the DL. But don’t count on him to work late into today’s game. He logged a bit more than five innings per start with Tacoma.

Campillo might be a hot prospect, but I don’t like his chances in Detroit against a Tigers club that just dropped five of six on the road. They’ll see today’s game as a big opportunity to get back on the right track.

Note: This line has since moved and the Tigers are now favored at -150.

Oakland at Minnesota: Oakland at -125

The Twins are in a world of pain. Just ask Torii Hunter.

In case you missed it, the superstar centerfielder broke his left ankle Friday in Boston and will be out at least a month, and might be lost for the season. It’s a huge loss for the club both offensively and defensively at a time when the Twins really needed to get on a run. Doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. They’ve dropped five straight and seven of their last eight heading into Joe Mays’ start against the surging Athletics today.

The forecast doesn’t look good for Twinkies supporters, either. Mays has been pumped for 13 earned runs over his last two starts.

Chicago Cubs at Philadelphia: Chicago at –120

The Cubs didn’t go out and make a big splash at the trade deadline, but they didn’t do anything stupid, either. Matt Lawton, who came over from Pittsburgh, seems like a great fit for the top of the order while giving the team a capable glove in the outfield.

"I thought he was the best leadoff hitter in the National League," Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon said of Lawton. "He did a tremendous job for us, never wavered in how he went about his business.”

That’s exactly what the Cubs need and I wouldn’t be surprised if he shows a little something today. And if not, Carlos Zambrano’s on the hill and he’s priced under –150, which is a nice change.

L.A. Dodgers at Washington: over 7 ½ runs (+105)

Not entirely sure what’s going on with this total. Yes, Esteban Loaiza has been solid lately and runs usually are hard to come by at RFK, but I’m not sure that the total should be this low.

Jeff Weaver has been pummeled for 11 combined runs over his last two starts and five of L.A.’s last six have played over.

The books may be trying to keep this total low because all three of this year’s meetings between the two clubs have gone under and Washington is on another under streak right now, too. But I’m not buying it. Still looks like a low number to me.
