I am getting tired of the offshore BS. What criteria do you look for when shopping for a local. Also, what are the legal ramifacations if one is busted placing bets with a local?

tough to "shop" for a local, mostly they will be shopping for you

and it's not all it's cracked to be, believe me

want to bet next week's NFL on Wednesday afternoon? Tough shit call back sunday after 11 AM. And good luck collecting if he doesn't feel like paying you. No RX, MW, SBR, etc to arbitrate for you, your arbitration is that he hangs up on you every time you call.

Unless they are giving you way off lines, you are better off playing the offshore books IMO

Anyway, the only way to do it is to find someone you trust and let him bring you in under his guy. Otherwise you have no idea who you are dealing with. Reputation is everything. I would look for guys who have been in business at least 5 years and have a great history with their clients. Real tough to find in most cases

Almost never any legal trouble for bettors-only bookmakers. You may be questioned but it is extremely rare for some one who is simply betting to be charged.

With a local you play on credit which good but when your in a hole you can get in a bigger hole.

Also you can check the lines offshore and if there is a late injury you can just place a bet with a local becaue the line is posted an hour before first game and it doesen't change.

Why is the perception of locals so bad? "If" I was running a book....Id have a spread sheet scraping live lines, and a database program, that automatically updates with the live lines. The whole issue of payment confuses me? Why get into the biz without a bankroll, seems like you could make a good living with 100 customers, if you arent a complete moron about things.

Playing with a local these days is like playing a mind game. If you continually hit them with lines that are off they will catch on. It stinks but there is no point in having a local unless you try to middle the crap out of him.

What the hell is the difference between that and the offshores? Do they not do they same things, and/or deal sharp and square lines? Basically what Im trying to say, is that if a local operation basically runs the same way as an offshore, wouldnt you go with the local, because of the no-tax cash basis, credit, etc?

Remember playing with a local and the guy would have the lines 1 hour before the games start. Had to rush home or stop at a payphone from work to place my bets.

Offshore is nice as long as you get paid.

Thanks

I think if you are playing with retarded locals, then yes, I would want to play offshore. But if you have a local that is in the least bit technically savvy, ie forwards phone lines to a cell phone, can get updated lines at all times from a sports pagers, so you can bet whenever, I would want to play with a local, but thats just me.

Most locals now have their players action taken offshore(agents). Still a good amount of pen and paper shops though. Its a 24/7 business now and most locals cant compete with the variety and hours thatof the offshore shops. Playing thru an agent gets the player the best of both worlds

Had a somewhat lengthy reply for this thread but my reply got stuck loading...that little progress bar on the bottom of the page crept over about halfway and quit.

Then it got lost somewhere.

Maybe it'll take this one, either way.....computers suck.

Having a local is a pain in the ass - every week, I have to be at a certain spot at a certain time to collect/pay. Not fun.

The ONLY good thing about a local is that you don't need to post up - but that isn't necessarily a good thing.

Oh I have never asked him for a BONUS but he will buy me a beer every so often (which comes out to be 85 cents if I bought it at the liquor store)

Look for a local that is either a Cop or FBI agent. Or else ask the Cops and FBI agents who THEY bet through.

I wish there were a local here.

Keep at least 2 solid offshore outlets for you wont be calling a local all hours of the day and night to get a play down and probably not many late game 2h wagers and/or prop plays.

Also, remember all locals bump lines here and there depending on their 'opinion' and/or the local action.

If a good local you wont have to settle every week, but only when the figure is an established +/- amount.
