Yes I am a Calgary Flames fan, have been since there 1986 cup run. In year's past there was no way that this team would of been able to add a Amonte or McCarty. Neither are what there once were but both can still add alot to that team. Just creates excitment league wide instead of watching the Rangers, Leafs, Avs, and Red Wings over paid for everyone over 30.

Flames sign Amonte, McCarty

Hours after losing Martin Gelinas, the Calgary Flames have added some scoring punch.

TSN has learned that the team signed unrestricted free agent forwards Tony Amonte and Darren McCarty on Tuesday.

Amonte signed a two-year contract at $1.85 million per season. McCarty also signed a two-year deal for $1.6 million ($800,000 per season).

Amonte had his contract bought out by the Philadelphia Flyers last week.
Related Info

In 14 seasons with New York, Chicago, Phoenix and Philadelphia, Amonte had 392 goals and 436 assists in the regular season; he added 20 goals and 31 assists in 86 playoff games.

No, did you not read my post? I am not excited about Almonte I even said that he is past his prime. What I am excited about is that all 30 teams are on a level playing field when it comes to putting on the best team they can. In year's past a free agent wouldn't come close to playing for Calgary no maater how good that team is. Its refreshing to see that has changed.

Ok you mention Almonte being past his prime but yet you are planning a parade in Philly with the signing of Derian Hatcher?? Speaking of past his prime.

Hitch says he's in the best shape of his life....anything Hitch says is the gospel here so :103631605 .

I'm kind of sad with this new NHL. Though the Flyers really didn't take advantage of the opportunities they've had over the years. Oh well.

P.S. and it's AMONTE not ALMONTE!!! Sorry. :toast:

I don't expect much from him either but on the PP with Inginla he might do something but at even strength he'll struggle

No worries about the spelling and Hatcher is washed up with a bad knee you should be way more excited about Jeff Carter and Mike Richards than Hatcher. Just an interesting double standard on how one player is cast away is now deemed useless and another player who is cast away is now deemed to be great, don't get that logic. Both players Amonte and Hatcher will add something to each team.

The higher scoring format may give it some more appeal with the ADD riddled fans in the US who think that the only thing that constitutes action is points on the board.

Soccer has the same problem in the US.

As a Pittsburgh fan, I agree completely. Town is buzzing somewhat about the Pens since the new NHL deal was announced and we got Crosby. Interesting to see who the Pens will sign. Have always been a casual follower of the NHL/Pens but I am looking forward to this coming season. Now if only MLB could follow suit.

They both add to the payroll.

If the game is going to change like they promised us, I don't see either player adding much. Losing a full year has changed the dynamics and every player is TWO years older.

Calgary has a stud goalie, and a stud forward - if they filled their team with top-notch speed, we could see something special - but adding Amonte isn't something to get excited about.

As for Phillly, I will always maintain that Clarke is the worst GM in the NHL. Not much to add there.

Amonte is a great pickup! He adds some skill to our lineup and is definately something for us Flames fans to get excited about. Also the addition of McCarty is a definate plus.

Flames signed Iginla this morning as well

Hatcher passed his prime?!?! His last season he played set career high in plus/minus with +37 and was one point of his single season career high in total points? Far from being past his prime. Took philly with a local to win the cup at 9to1!!!

What I would like to know is how traditionally low-paying Edmonton can afford to sign Chris Pronger. This must be a result of the new salary cap forcing teams to spread out the expensive talent.

His last season played was 3 years ago. He has a bum knee and he wasn't the greatest staker before that. Bobby Clarke still wants to build his team like the mid 70's broadstreet bullies. He'll be alright but no where near the All Star level he was in Dallas

Although a lot of Clarke's move puzzle me (The trading of Markov, acquiring Hatcher and Therien being the most recent), saying he's the worst GM in the league is ludicrous. Taking 3 different organizations to Stanley Cup Finals in a span of less than 10 years has to mean something. Or maybe he's just really lucky.

How long will it take big-market teams to try to circumvent the salary cap when things are not going well?

Yeah I'm not sure about the "worst GM" but I'm not sure why he's giving out such big contracts? He's definately got some shuffling around to do now with signing Forsberg

Talk about worst GM-Reiger is a joke. Sabres current roster has a total of like 12 goals between them. This is supposed to help the "weaker" teams-well Buffalo will fall flat in it's face by itself-thank you very much.
Satan and Zhitty to the Isles. I doubt Darcy has even picked up the phone yet-PATHETIC!!
