ST. LOUIS — The Sporting News on Tuesday told local fans what they already know: Iowa City is a sports-crazy town, and football is king.

Iowa City is No. 49 in the magazine’s annual ranking of America’s best sports cities, and No. 1 for college football.

Ames was second among Iowa cities, 78th overall, in the ranking of 388 sports cities or regions.

Other Iowa cities ranked were Cedar Falls, No. 137; Des Moines, No. 156; Quad Cities, No. 206; Cedar Rapids, No. 310; Clinton, No. 340; and Burlington, No. 369.

The magazine’s annual ranking is published in the edition available on newsstands today.

After a year in which the curse was reversed and the Patriots won the Super Bowl (again), Boston earned its second straight designation as America’s top sports city.

The Sporting News honored Boston for the third time in four years.
The honor recognizes the home of the Red Sox, who rallied from a three-games-to-none deficit to win the American League pennant, then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series; and the New England Patriots, whose win over Philadelphia in the Super Bowl gave them three championships in four years.

“It’s not unusual for one team to dominate a sport for a few years,” Sporting News executive editor Bob Hille said. “But to see a city dominate the sports landscape the way Boston has recently is amazing. If you thought any other city had a shot at No. 1, you weren’t paying much attention to the sports world.”

In addition, the city saw a Celtics playoff run, a March Madness invitation for Boston College, even the Major League Lacrosse championship.

Los Angeles/Anaheim took top honors in 2003.

The rest of this year’s top 10, in order: Philadelphia, Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles/Anaheim, Houston, Baltimore/Washington, Dallas/Fort Worth, Atlanta and New York/New Jersey.

Vikings, don't make me go find the story about the Iowa lady who electrocuted herself while trying to "shock worms out of the ground". Fill me in on this one-I'm from Omaha, but have NEVER heard about this.

Chicago should be first every year. Fans support such crappy teams for this long is amazing.

The thing about Boston sports is that the Red Sox, Pats, Bruins and Celtics are really regional teams. Only the Patriots are called New England, but the other three could easily use New England as well (instead of Boston). The fans in northern Maine are just as crazy about the Sox as those living on Beacon St. in Boston.

I would rank Boston Red Sox fans at the top...they've put up with the most heartbreak and kept coming back for more, they travel well all over the east to watch their Red Sox play...

With the Sox recent title and New England becoming the dominant football team, its got to be great to be a Boston fan...the Pats were usually not going anywhere for the past 30 years, prior to this remarkable team....

My top 5 baseball cities (fans)

Boston
St Louis
Cubs
NYY ( I wonder if they'd support a loser though)

If your from Ohmaha you must know that you need worms when you go "Noodleing". I understand that is the Number One sport in Nebraska.

J-man, the answer is NO! The great Don Mattingly played to a whopping 20-25k per night for years. And I can get a ticket at Yankee Stadium[baring a SOX game] anytime I want. Try that chit in Boston for the last decade! Ain't going to happen! MAY'N!!
