Cubs vs. Phillies - Phillies –135
You may have noticed the Phillies’ hitting seems to come and go lately. Part of the blame can go to the All-Star break’s Home Run Derby if you’re asking manager Charlie Manuel.
Manuel says Bobby Abreu, one of his team’s top sluggers, hasn’t been hitting well since altering his swing to help launch balls over the wall during the fan friendly event in mid-July. Abreu delighted onlookers when he set a record by blasting a combined 41 balls over the fence during the competition.
Abreu is batting.194 with no home runs and four RBIs in the 17 games since the break and he struck out 16 times in 62 at-bats.
"He`s chasing balls up, but he`ll get it back,” Manuel told the Philadephia Enquirier. The Phils’ manager also said Abreu is standing too far from the plate and his rhythm is off. But there could be a light at the end of the tunnel for Philly bettors.
“Maybe these hard throwers the Cubs have will help him. He`ll have to get on the ball quicker."
Seems to hold some truth. Abreu cranked a double and posted just his second multi-hit game since the All-Star break in last night’s 2-1 loss to the Cubs. His last home run came July 4, a span of 24 games.
A’s vs. Twins - under 8 runs
When you combine Oakland’s away under record with Minnesota’s home one, you get a lucrative 64-33-9 mark. That’s not the only reason this game looks like a solid under bet.
Minny’s season batting average has plummeted from .266 to a mere .223 over its last 10 games, during which the under is 8-2. To make matters worse Torii Hunter, the team’s leading RBI man, is now out for at least a month with an ankle injury.
Throw in a pair of solid under pitchers, Rich Harden and Carlos Silva, and you’ll understand why this line opened at a lowly 7 ½.
Astros vs. D-Backs - Astros +122
No way the Astros should be underdogs by this much, if underdogs at all. They`ve won eight of their last 10 games while the Diamondbacks haven`t won more than two games in a row since mid May.
Don`t be fooled by Houston`s Triple-A call-up Ezequiel Astacio, who carries a 7.17 ERA and a 1-5 record. This rookie right-hander just needed a little time to get comfortable in his major league surroundings.
Astacio has lasted at least six innings in each of his last three starts and his ERA was just 3.00 over those efforts. The Dominican Republic product also fanned 16 hitters combined during those starts.
"When he`s down in the zone, he doesn`t get hit very much," manager Phil Garner told the Houston Chronicle. "When he gets up in the zone is when he gets hit."
Let`s assume Garner has passed this observation along to Astacio.
Baltimore vs. L.A. Angels - Angels -140
Get John Lackey and the Angels at -140 right now if you can because this line will likely be much higher by the end of the day.
In case you hadn`t heard, the O`s have issues. Not only are they the worst team in baseball right now with just one win in their last 14 games, but you may have heard about their star first baseman`s little steroid scandal. Looks like more and more stories are coming out that discredit Rafael Palmeiro`s claim that he couldn`t have unknowinlgy used steroids. Last night`s 10-1 drubbing at the hands of the Angels was by far the worst loss of Baltimore`s recent skid.
Lackey isn`t the guy you want to face if you`re struggling right now, either. His ERA is 0.89 over his last three starts.
