Beware the trap games of August/September

We are now coming up on what I feel is one of the most treacherous times of the year to be betting on baseball. A time where there looks to be great opportunities everywhere, but when you put the money down and watch the game, your oasis of a play in the middle of the board suddenly turns into a mirage.

In the mist of the playoff hunt right now, there are 4 teams that are within 5 games of the leaders of their division. That’s not too bad, but the bigger problem for bettors lies with the wild card. As of my writing this today there are 11 teams still legitimately in the hunt for a coveted playoff spot via the wild card (within 5 games). And during their hunt many of them will be playing teams that wouldn’t be considered “good teams”. And the old team competing for a playoff/wild card spot playing a “bad team” trap is one of the biggest in sports. And with so many teams still in contention it’ll be around a plenty in the next month or so.

Many of these wild card contenders will simply tank it over the course of the next month. Probably not all at once, but just enough to keep you on the hook for awhile and drain your bankroll. Maybe the team ahead of them will lose earlier in the day, and you’ll see a good match up for them against a weaker team later that day start to look even better once you factor in the added motivation. You’ll lay the juice (sometimes LOTS of juice)...and shake your head as you watch them lose what looked like a great opportunity with so many factors in your favor.

So remember not to get too caught up in the whole wild card deal. It may be that the team you’re looking at playing today is now within two games of the wild card spot with the team ahead of them losing earlier in the day, against a rookie pitcher just brought up by management making his first big league start for a team that has nothing left to play for...but they can still lose. And with alarming regularity!
