Im not sure if there were bookmakers per se, and the only mention of gambling that I can remember is casting lots (dice made from bones, I belive) by the gaurds of Jesus when he was on the cross. If you are Catholic, trust me, its endorsed. I grew up with 12 years of catholic schooling, grade/High school, and pretty much all the big money makers to drive down the cost of my 15k/year education was from raffles, chuch a luck, pull tabs, bingo, and casino nights. Not to mention the dough I would take from the old timers in the our school's gym, when they would have silent auctions and such.

When Jesus entered the temple in Jeruselam it was full of money changers, and also games of chance. Gambling and odds were very popular at the time. When Jesus closed the revenue, Lord Caiphas turned to Judas to set him up. Mere 20 pieces of silver got the games going again. Threw the bones at Jesus feet for his only possession, his robe. All events at the colisseum at Rome had odds. It was very commonplace to bet on the gladiators, so you would have a rooting interest. They had chalkboards, adjusted odds, you name it. Adam gambled on Eve, eve gambled on the serpent. It is inherent, just not a great message to convey when preaching a religon. Wasn't there a commandment, honor thy bet?

They cast lots, bet on atheltic events.

Not going to quote scripture, but it's mentioned many times.

To interpret,
if you are Catholic, the Bible says gambling is OK, especially if it's bingo.
if you are Baptist, the Bible says all gambling is sin, but then so is anal sex.

I won't get into any others to be accused of racism, but suffice to say one of my ex-es is Baptist, thus the bitterness.
