Spent the weekend at Lake McConaghy (a massive lake in western Nebraska with nicer white sand than Cancun).

About 100 yards down the beach\shoreline, a young deer is coming down to the lake for a drink. After getting a couple of sips of water, the deer walks out into the lake.....and continues until the point that he's swimming.

Keep in mind, this baby is about 2 miles across where we were. This thing isn't just swimming, he's really moving-and in a beeline for the opposing shore.

I guess it's actually quite common-but it never occured to me that a deer could POSSIBLY swim with their skinny legs & feet that aren't exactly the best for swimming.

We were in total shock watching it......that it was a suicide mission for sure. I've never seen anything like it before in my life!!

That's my "WTF?" story for the weekend :toast:

I would say most wild animals are great swimmers, evolution ensures that trait should continue.

Have you ever seen "My Cousin Vinny"??

Marisa Touma (sp?), says (when Vinny is getting ready to go hunting), "...imagine you're a deara (w/ a NY accent)."

Marisa Tomei in the movie, The Slums of Beverly Hills, what a great rack when she's getting out of the shower.

How is this incident relevant to a website devoted to sports betting and sports betting related topics?

So you're saying the deer had no chance of surviving?

That would have flipped me out too...are you sure he was committing suicide though?

That is interesting, TTinCo. I've never heard of a deer swimming that far. How long did you watch him go? Imagine you're waterskiing at 25 m.p.h. in the middle of the lake and your boat hits a.....deer?

I did see on some nature show years ago that most animals' natural forms of locomotion also works in the water for them. (Picture a dog walking/swimming, a snake, even an elephant!) Humans are one of the only aberrations from that since we walk upright, we have to learn a new and somewhat "unnatural" technique for swimming.

A downside of evolution, I guess. We have opposable thumbs and invented the TV, but we have to flop around ineffeciently to swim.

Of course it wasn't committing suicide, but that would be a LONG swim for anything. That is very strange. I know that deer can swim fairly well, but two miles of swimming....? Wow. tulsa
