NCAA banned mascots and banned schools with indian nicknames form hosting post-season tournies. What fukkin nerve they have to smack schools like FSU in the face that produce so much revenue for them.

It may not be well known, but many of the larger schools have quietly and recently not so quietly met and discussed leaving the NCAA and starting their own organization. Would serve the NCAA right, they are a bunch of nazis.

I have scanned a few college message boards, support for FSU and other affected schools from OPPOSING fans all over the country is absolutely overwhelming. It appears the NCAA had no idea what they were doing and by capitulating to a small minority of PC screamers they may just have put their entire future as an organization on the line. This Politically correct stuff is out of hand.

I am Irish-descent, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame doesnt bother me, but its clearly FAR, FAR more offensive ( An outright racial slur and derogitory) than "Seminoles" or "Tribe" or " Chipewas".

USC Trojans- might be offensive to Turkish Americans. The list would go on and on.

There are a LOT of big Division one schools getting completely fed up with the NCAA over many issues. The gloves are coming off on this one. FSU is suing the NCAA. This might just be the spark to set off a civil war in the college ranks.

Do not be surprised if 5-10 years from now 20-30 big school have broken off to set-up their own conference and organization.

http://seminoles.collegesports.com/genrel/080505aab.html

quote from FSU president T.K. Wetherell' " That the NCAA would now label our close bond with the Seminole Tribe of Florida as culturally ' hostile and abusive' is both outrageous and insulting."

Give em hell FSU

the rumor is all the top confernce schools, sec, acc, big 12, pac ten, big ten, etc would leave the NCAA together.

these schools are growing increasingly tired of the naziness of the NCAA and the archiac bowl and poll system and most importantly, giving away large chunks of their revenue to division 1 pretenders like louisana-lafayette, buffalo, troy st, etc who are coming into Division 1 and getting payouts from the money the power confernce schools are generating.

the schools that break off would negotiate their own TV deals and play a football playoff, no bowls no polls. these schools would then be able to share a very large pot of money among a small amount of recipients. The NCAA doesnt seem to realize they need these schools more than the schools need them

Hope FSU wins this one. I am getting tired of all this political correctness bullshit. I think of only positives when I hear an Indian mascot name.

here are the affected schools. under the NCAA executive committee mandate, none can host a post-season tournament in ANY sport, or send mascots to post season games and they must cover up their school name and logo on uniforms when competing in the post season. :ughhh:  ( Yes, that is crazy). Football bowls, since they are not regulated by the NCAA are not affected, all other sports are.

Florida St ( seminoles)
C Michigan ( Chipewas)
Utah ( Utes)
Alcorn St ( Braves)
Illinois ( Fighting Illini)
Bradley ( Braves)
Ark St ( Indians)
Louisiana-Monroe ( indians)
Catawba ( Indians)
Midwestern St ( indians)
Indiana Univerisity-Pennsylvania ( indians)
Cathage College ( redmen)
Chowan college ( Braves)
McMurry ( Indians)
Mississippi College ( Choctaws)

SE OK ST ( Fighting Savages) :icon_conf OK-this one should be changed.

sidenote- Can anyone explain to me as an American of Irish descent why Fighting Illini and Fighting Sioux are "hostile and abusive" as the NCAA called them, but Fighting Irish and their fighting leprechaun mascot are perfectly OK?

Note- Florida St has the FULL support of the Seminole Tribe of Florida to use seminoles as the nickname. It is not offensive to them.

re: Iowa and Wisconsin, I heard that. I dont agree with it but I don't have have a problem with that , its their decision.

Where does it end though? I take it Iowa and Wisconsin are willing to schedule Notre Dame? Why is that different? How about the UNLV Rebels? ( could be very offensive to black americans). Oklahoma St Cowboys?

I have read that South Carolina has had trouble and lawsuits from PETA, so maybe animal mascots will all have to go too. the Duke Blue Devils get harrassment from religious groups who want the name dropped because they say it promotes devil worshipping.

Seminole tribe of Florida not happy with NCAA either. Comments from Nick Osceola of the Seminole tribe;

Quote:
Osceola said the Seminole Tribe of Florida disagrees with the NCAA's decision and determination that FSU's nickname and symbols are "hostile and abusive." Osceola was also concerned that his tribe was not approached by the NCAA regarding the matter.

"It's like history - they left the natives out," Osceola said. "They have non-natives telling natives what's good for them or how they should use their name. You have a committee made up of non-natives telling people that they can not use a native name when you have a native tribe - a tribal government, duly elected and constituted - that said they agree with Florida State.

here is a statement from the Chippewa tribe, regarding Central Michigan University;

SAGINAW CHIPPEWA INDIAN TRIBE STATEMENT

Joseph Sowmick, Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe spokesman, says, “The rich relationship that the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe has with CMU cannot be determined by an outside entity without contacting the institution and the government involved. Any arbitrary decision made from an outside source regarding university-tribal relations is not acceptable, and certainly the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe would welcome a dialogue to discuss this further.”

I also think the NCAA should crack down on teams that use animals as mascots and nicknames. It is demeening to the particular animal species and creates steriotypes that are condescending toward wildlife in general. It is time we all did the right thing....Randyrohm

You've got to admit that Stereotypes do save time though.
