MLB Hot Lines: Monday`s best bets
Brian Covert

St. Louis at Milwaukee- over 9 ½ runs

Matt Morris has not been the same pitcher since mid-July.

The Cardinals starter has struggled at 1-2 in his last three starts with a 6.75 ERA. The over cashed on an eight-run total in his last outing, a 9-6 St. Louis win Aug. 3 over the Florida Marlins.

“Early on they seemed to be on every ball I threw,” Morris told reporters.

The over has cashed in Morris’ last four starts.

Right-hander Victor Santos is on the mound for the Brewers. The over has cashed in four of Santos’ last five starts. He is 0-2 versus the Cards this year with a 6.60 ERA and the Cardinals are hitting .310 off righties in their last 10 games.

Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees- under 10 runs

I first saw Orlando Hernandez pitch in 1998, and although I’m no Yankee supporter I immediately became a fan of the high-kicking Cuban. I don’t know if it’s the awkward delivery or the mystery of where he actually came from. Perhaps I just like the nickname “El Duque”. Whatever it is, I’m looking forward to seeing Hernandez pitch in his return to the Bronx.

Hernandez had a very respectable 3.78 ERA at Yankee Stadium in six seasons in pinstripes. The 35-year-old was at his best last season posting a 5-1 record with a 2.61 ERA. El Duque was a fan favorite at Yankee Stadium and I’m thinking he will pitch well in his return

The White Sox offense should keep totals down, too.

Chicago scored only 17 runs in five games last week and it’s not as if they were going against All-Star caliber pitching. Chicago scored just two runs against the Seattle Mariners` Joel Pineiro as the under cashed in Seattle’s 4-2 win on Friday. They won but scored only three runs against Seattle’s Jeff Harris Sunday and the under cashed in Chicago’s 3-1 win.

Florida at Colorado- Game 2 under 11 ½ runs

I’d like to run with the under in Florida for awhile.

The Marlins are hurting, tired and still have eight games left in a stretch that sees them play 20 straight days. To make matters worse they are missing regulars Juan Encarnacion, Paul Lo Duca and slugger Carlos Delgado. The trio account for almost 30 percent of the Marlins` run production. Filling in they have Chris Aguila, Jeff Conine and Matt Treanor who combined haven’t scored half as many runs as Delgado.

As for Colorado, this will be the team`s third game in 24 hours. They are still without first baseman Todd Helton, who is batting .368 with 14 homers in 56 games against the Marlins. The slugger is on the disabled list with a strained calf.

Cincinnati at Chicago Cubs- Reds +132

I watched the Cubs play the Mets last night and it wasn’t pretty.

What was Chicago thinking? A brutal throw by Aramis Ramirez in the first, allowing Carlos Beltran on base, was just another bad play in a trend of indifferent fielding by the Cubs. Beltran would later score when center fielder Jose Macias played a Cliff Floyd bloop single so nonchalantly King Kong Bundy could have scored from first.

The Cubs were quickly down 2-0 and the lead was too much for them to overcome. Chicago, hitting just .235 over the past seven days, lost to New York 6-1 as –137 favorites.

“They found every hole. We helped them with a couple of errors, and we weren`t doing it offensively,” a frustrated Dusty Baker told reporters after Sunday’s loss.

The Cubs have lost five in a row and have cost backers 5.53 units during the streak.

They now host the Cincinnati Reds, losers of three of their past five. Although Cincinnati’s bats have quieted, averaging around three runs per game in their past five, the value seems too good against a struggling Cubs squad.

Agree with you on all the plays except for the White Sox/Hernandez play. El Duque has not been the same pitcher since coming back from surgery this year. He has allowed at least 4 runs in 6 of his last eight starts with the worst start lasting only 2 innings giving up 6 runs. I see the Yankees mashing El Duque today.
