Rangers vs. Yankees - New York -165
OK, so -165 isn’t exactly what you’d call great odds most days, but they are when you take a look at the Rangers’ pitching situation.
Texas has made 10 transactions with pitchers since the All-Star break in the midst of the Kenny Rogers suspension and some other issues. The latest move is the call-up of Erasmo Ramirez to the bullpen after right-hander Ricardo Rodriguez was placed on the DL on Tuesday.
The Rangers are desperate for a pen pitcher to actually provide some relief after using at least four relief pitchers in every game of their just-finished three-game series against the Red Sox. The overworked relievers likely won’t get any rest tonight, however, when John Wasdin – a reliever himself – makes the start.
Wasdin isn’t used to tossing a lot of innings in one night and has only once lasted beyond the sixth frame in his five starts this season. Expect New York to beat up on a vulnerable bullpen in the late innings.
Note: Texas is riding a nine-game over streak heading into tonight’s matchup.
Devil Rays vs. Orioles - Tampa Bay +140
The Rays have been pretty bad at Camden Yards this year. Like, 0-5 bad for a loss of five units. But today couldn’t be a better time to break out of that slump.
Rafael Palmeiro returns to the O’s, and he might not want to brace for a welcoming party. Baltimore wasn’t in contact with the first-baseman during the 10 days he was suspended after testing positive for steroids and the word around the clubhouse seems to be that many O’s personnel would rather he just watch his team’s games from his living room.
"I don`t see how he can be that dumb to return," the Washington Post quoted one source close to the Orioles as saying.
Palmeiro probably won’t be in the lineup, which might make things even worse for Baltimore. At least if he was playing, he could contribute. If he just sits in the dugout, he’s nothing but a distraction. Period.
Phillies vs. Dodgers - over 7 ½ runs
Am I missing something here? A 7 ½-run total?
The two starting pitchers, Cory Lidle and Odalis Perez, carry a combined ERA of 10.53 over their last three games; the Dodgers are on a five-game over streak and the over is 3-1 in the Phillies’ last four outings, thanks to some recent strong hitting; and the first two games of this series have both soared over the total after the two clubs racked up a sum of 26 runs.
But the part that really baffles me is the total was 7 ½ for each of the first two games of this series and oddsmakers aren’t making any adjustments. Take what the books are giving you here.
