MLB Hot Lines: Friday`s best bets

Rangers vs. Yankees – over 11 runs

The Yankees bullpen is a mess.

Mariano Rivera, the only guy in New York’s pen that can be depended on, was called upon Thursday when Tom Gordon couldn’t get out of the eighth inning versus the Texas Rangers. Rivera got the Yankees out of the jam and held the lead in the ninth in New York’s 9-8 win over the Texas Rangers as –160 favorites.

”That wasn`t a plan. That was a panic move,” Torre told reporters after the game. “We need to win ballgames, especially games that are within our grasp.”

The 1 1/3 innings of work was Rivera’s second in as many nights and I can’t imagine him pitching again tonight. Without him the Yankees have no one in their bullpen to relieve Al Leiter who has lasted past the sixth inning only once in 22 starts this season.

I don’t see the Rangers having any sympathy for the Yankees either. Texas is hitting .306 over the last 10 games averaging 7.77 runs per game. Unfortunately for the Rangers their pitching has a 7.83 ERA over the same stretch. Maybe that explains why the over has cashed in all 10 games.

Cardinals vs. Cubs – Chicago -125

Carlos Zambrano seems to save his best performances for the St. Louis Cardinals.

The hard-throwing right-hander has given up more than two runs only once in his last eight starts versus the Cards and I imagine he is still chaffed about the nine-inning, three-hit loss to Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals July 22.

There are some questions about Zambrano after he pulled himself in the third inning of Sunday’s 6-1 loss to the New York Mets with back spasms. However the self-proclaimed ‘warrior’ dispelled any worries the back was still affecting him after a throwing session Tuesday.

“At first it felt like Sunday,” Zambrano told the Chicago Tribune. ”But then when I started playing catch and warming up, it felt much better.”

The Cardinals send Jason Marquis to the mound Friday. The right-hander is 0-3 in his last three outings with a 6.52 ERA. It probably won’t help his ERA that the Cubs` two best players, Derek Lee and Aramis Ramirez, are hitting .428 combined off him.

The Cards are 6-7 as underdogs this season for a loss of 2.63 units.

Jays vs. Orioles – Toronto +130

I had an argument with a friend the other day. He was trying to tell me the Baltimore Orioles were a good team. Perhaps three months ago I would’ve agreed with him. Not anymore.

The Orioles are 9-18 and have cost backers 11.49 units since the All-Star break. Baltimore is tied with Minnesota for the fewest runs scored in the American League and the Orioles pitching staff has a 5.20 ERA since the Mid-Summer Classic. They give the ball to Daniel Cabrera today to open their three-game series against the Blue Jays. Cabrera is 0-3 with a 9.26 ERA in his last three outings.

Countering for the Blue Jays is Josh Towers. The right-hander has gone 3-1 in his last four starts for a profit of 3.08 units. Towers went eight innings, giving up just three hits in Toronto’s 1-0 win over the Orioles as a +137 underdog in Baltimore May 3.

White Sox vs. Red Sox - under 9 ½ runs

This week’s White Sox-Yankees series had a decidedly playoff feel to it. The series featured low scoring pitcher’s duels that saw only 11 runs scored in the three games. I expect more of the same when the Chicago travels to Boston this weekend.

Mark Buerhle gets the call for the White Sox today. The Chicago right-hander has rediscovered his arm after a run of suspect outings. Buerhle has allowed only one run in his last two outings, both wins over the Seattle Mariners and the Baltimore Orioles.

Red Sox hurler David Wells has not given up more than three runs in his last six starts going at least six innings in all of them. “Boomer” has been a master of control this season walking only 12 batters in 123 1/3 innings.

**Cub/STL game is not in the poll since it started

I think Atlanta and Houston are the best plays on the board today. Duke might be able to hold the Astros for 6 innings but Pirates bullpen nothing compared to the Stros' esp. at home. But if I had to pick one of the above, I would go with NY over.
