Chris Carpenter wins his 17th game this season. Leads the league in wins, complete games, & innings pitched. 2nd in strikeouts and ERA at 2.25. 9-0 over last 11 starts.

One thing that won't help him is the Cards lead in the Central...if they have 10 game lead in September...you would have to think that Larussa will be careful with Carpenter and give him some rest due to the weird injury at the end of last season. Gotta have Carp for the World Series this year.

Defintely appears to be the front runner and he has had an incredible season thus far. I still have my doubts as to whether or not he can be a "stopper" come playoff time for some reason though.

I would have to agree Carpenter is the CY Young winner unless he really falls off the table! His road record just as impressive!

IF Clemens keeps his ERA at historic proportions, he HAS to get the award. Taking nothing away from Carpenter, what Roger is doing is nothing short of phenomenal and I don't even like him.

Clemens easy, Carpenter barely over Pedro for second.

Roger Clemens road numbers this year:

6-1 record
0.37 ERA
6 runs
3 earned
.167 BA
.240 slugging

He really kept his team from falling apart when they were really struggling early. Not taking anything away from Carpenter, who was been great on the road too, but they were supposed to make the playoffs. Clemens doing this at 40-41 is incredible. There is still room for Pedro to win this too with a hot end to the season, and the Mets making the playoffs.

Lot of ball left. Carpenter has 8-9 starts left. If he gets to 23 wins, it's his for sure. His ERA is still mighty worthy. Clemens would have to go 8-1 or better down stretch to take it. Wins with a great winning pct (which Carp has) will be hard to overcome if you are 7-8 wins less. additionally, Carpenter is top 3 in Ks

The run support stat overrated as can be skewed by the top 3 scoring games. I'd venture a guess that if each pitcher had the top three run support games removedfrom there avg, the differentila would be closer.

The fact is Carpenter has a pretty gaudy ERA of 2.26.

I'm sure there have been other years when Cy Young winner had an ERA higher than other starters in his or her league.

Roger needs 18 wins

Clemens has pitched his TENTH game of no runs last night. Last person to do that was Pedro. Houston is 5-5 in those games. Give him those 5 wins and he is 16-4. Looks a little better.

Last night was the 4th time this year Houston lost 1-0 with Clemens started. How people say Carperter is having a better season is amazing to me.

if they both continue, i would say carpenter will win. but i think it should go to clemens. carpenter has a better team behind him and clemens is on the cusp of
history with his e.r.a. i do think clemens past cy young's work against him in a close race.

What Clemens has done is nothing short of miraculous for his age but fact Carpenter is I believe 3-0 vs Astros while Clemens is 1-2 vs Cards will come into play in this one. Carp deserves it as much as Clemens. Clemens would be the first to tell everyone Carp is Cy young but how both pitch last 6 weeks will go a long way in determining it. Clemens name may get him award as well over Carp as RJohnson used to win it for same reason. I would vote as follows:

1. Carp
2. Clemens
3. Pedro
4. Oswalt
5. Smoltz

This is my top 5.
