They think NYY need to make 3 outs in 5th to win (rain), had to check rulebook !

What is the situation here?

It was 3-3 after 4.5, and the bottom 5 isn't complete..

rain, tarp on field. Announcers suggested Posada should swing bat to make 3rd out and official game, if rained out NYY win. 2 out in B5.

If a game is 'called', or suspended, winners and losers for betting are official after at least 5 full innings of play unless the home team is leading after 4½ innings. If a game is 'called', or suspended etc, the winner is determined by the score after the last full inning (unless the home team scores to tie, or takes the lead in the bottom half of the inning, in which case the winner is determined by the score at the time the game is called).

With reference to the first part, it suggests the second part (if home team scores to go ahead) only counts after 5 innings, or if the home team is ahead after 4.5... the home team wasn't ahead after 4.5.

I'll defer to your experience, as I've not experienced this before, but my reading of the rules would suggest it may not be official.

The announcers were correct.

If there is a led change in the bottom of the 5th and the game is rained out, the 5th inning must be completed for the Yankees to win.

Then they are twice wrong, they read from rulebook and "corrected " themselves to say NYY win if game rained out. There may have been a slight change this year.

They started game back up but...
If it were to have rained the rest of the day, the 5th inning would not have counted and therefore would not be an official game. You revert back to the last completed inning. If they would've made the third out, yanks would've won 7-3.

Another example....
Visiting team is leading 4-3 after 7 innings. Home team scores 10 in the bottom of 8th but there is only one out...starts pouring down rain, game gets called, reverts back to 7th and visiting team gets the win.

Somebody's wrong ! According to this game became official when NYY took lead in B5 and before 3rd out. See paragraph #3.
