If the sportsbooks up and left Costa Rica because of gambling being legalized in North America, how much of an impact would it have on the island countries?

There are no studies about that mainly because everyone that is not "in" wants to ignore it and label it as a "shady business"

but imagine this situation

there are about 15000 (my estimate) people employeed by pokerrooms/bingo/casino/sportsbooks , they normally get a minimum of 700-800 dollars /month , thats 12.000.000 dollars monthly

out of this the goverment gets in social security fees about 30% so thats a (once again ) minimum of 3.6 million

assuming they all get fired and are forced to get a "normal job" say 250 USD /month the goverment would lose (800-250)*15000*.30= 2.475 million USD PER MONTH!

now every company needs computers, supplies such as desks etc, office space, internet service, electricity , phone and the list goes on

internet ,electricity and phone all controlled by the goverment one way or the other

well you get the idea, the impact is huge :)

also the economy in CR is HEAVILY dollarized, everything is in dollars lately!, if you put 15000 people that earn USD to now earn a much lower amount in colones.......MANY who are in debt in dollars will now have big problems keeping up as the devaluation makes their colones less valuable every month

the only thing is, I am not sure they would all leave even if its 100% legalized in the States

there are many industries who are here or in other countries as their services were outsourced

capital one, for example has their call center here

one of Cisco TACs (technical support centers) is here as well

there is an economic advantage in having smaller operational costs by having their operations in a place like CR (I wish those @#$@#$@#$@#!!@!!!! of CR goverment would understand that !)

The U.S. General Accounting Office estimates there are at least 1,800 online casino sites worldwide. Most of the sites are based in the Caribbean. The GAO predicts worldwide revenue from those sites will reach $5 billion in 2003. The GAO says half of that will come from U.S. consumers. Online casinos are illegal in the U.S.

That is a lot, and a huge hit to Carribbean economies

Ain't that the truth!

Everytime I call a 1-800 number regarding a computer hardware/software issue I seem to speak to a lady or gentleman speaking excellent English with an Indian accent.

Shows how cheap phone service is these days.

Want to see outsourcing?

There are a few McDonalds in Colorado that take their drive through orders in India. The owner claims the accuracy rates are higher, costs are cheaper, and the cars per hour are higher.

About 10,000 people would be out of a job in Costa Rica, mostly young people, 20-30 group. That would take several years to fill up again....

so in short, it would really hurt us.
