My guess is that the amount wagered is much lower when the jackpot is lower. Not that $25mil pretax is pocket change, but it just doesn't get the publicity & mania that a nice juicy $150 mil does.

(Therefore, they want them higher faster)

Makes the state ones more attractive, or less unnatractive, to me, haven't played in over a year. I think it was already about 70 million: 1

Interesting...in Canada the game is 6/49 but all the winnings are paid immediately and tax free. Generally a few $million if no carry over.

I think it started with 49, may be wrong. Bigger market here, but those extra numbers add a lot of combinations. I hope the gov't greed backfires on them !

How much money do they make off of powerball sales alone? An obscene figure I am sure. And then on top of that, they take an additional cut of the winnings through taxes. Sickening. I think I have bought a non scratch off lottery ticket once in my life.

Most lotteries in the US (single state and multi-state) have a takeout of around 50%; I believe it's roughly the same for scratch-offs.

If you don't know it already, lotteries run by the states are scams. Having more numbers means that the lotto ruolls over more often. When it does, the state has a higher "skim". The freakin' idiots that run these lottos are like freakin' corporations nowadays. They look to get the most out of the bottom line. In Calif. they claim that they need this money to bolster the starting(lowest) $7 mill. that the Lotto starts at instead of the $3 mill that it used to start at. They figured if it started higher, it would bring in more sales. But the joke is that they already have a formula no matter what the sales are. Her it starts at 7 mill. Not hit it goes to 10 mill. Now the next price is ridiculous. Not hit it only goes up 2 mill to 12 mill. They've been doing this for about 6 months now. So this BS of the Lotto going up depending on sales is BS. They do what they want and run it anyway that they want. Calif. increased their numbers because they wanted to be the highest lotto jackpot given away. When Powerball took that away from them they now have joined forces with Mega Millions.

Back in the 1980's.my mom got 5 out of 7 numbers and won $2,000 in a pennsylvania lotto.

It was exciting to watch.

Total BS and ripoff

Just like here in Florida a few years ago.

It used to be pick 6 out of 49 numbers for the jackpot and the jackpot always started at 7 Million dollars.....

Then they changed it to 6 out of 53 numbers and the freakin jackpot only begins at 3 Millions dollars!

:WTF:
